Here are a few more small things: First, the front frame that holds the spindles, fuel tank, and bar mounts is one piece in 72, and it's steel. I believe the 73's were aluminum and the rear bar support was separted from the spindle and tank mounting piece.
Looking at this in JDparts.com, it appears that this didn't happen until '75, ( 30,001 - 80,000 ).
In '72 - "74, this unit is referred to as the Power Module, and they were steel in '72, as I've seen them rust.
I've never noticed if the '73 up were aluminum or not.

'75 on up, its referred to as the front frame and steering support, ( two parts ).

Aluminum two-piece power modules were not introduced until 1974. 1972 and 1973 are steel, but there were some changes to the module from 1972 to 1973. The mounts for the console changed and mounts were added for the re-inforced bumper.

Jeff; I believe you are correct. JDParts doesn't have that quite right.

Greenfever: The '72 battery box mounts in the same place, in the same manner. However, the box itself is a bit different. The bracket on the box that the solenoid, rectifier, and circuit breaker mount to, is shorter.

I have an NOS e-start kit to install on my '72 ( I spent years finding that ) and the starter motor says "Easy Start" or something to that effect. The 73 up starters are American Bosch as far as I have seen.

Now that's a find man! I wish I could find one of them. Those old point ignitions don't start quite as sweet as my other Deere.
