I have a 76 400 with the KEC 340/22 engine. The sled starts easily and idles great however it won't build RPM's. Carb has been cleaned and no amount of adjusting makes any difference. So I have checked the stator and believe that the low speed coil it is bad. Here are my readings:
Low speed measures - 1.3
High speed measures 73
Mag Trigger 27.8
PTO Trigger 28
1) Is my assumption correct that the stator is bad and could be causing my problem.
If yes, then:
2) In looking at parts manuals for the 76 400 and 76 Cyclone it shows that the stator from 76 340 Cyclone with serial number 70000 or less are the same. Above serial 70000 the stator has a different part number which is also then used in the 76 Cyclone 440's. Are there any differences in the stators that would stop me from being able to use either stator as a replacement?
Thanks
Mike

Usually when the low speed windings fail the engine will not start. I had a stator with the high-speed windings fail which allowed the engine to start and idle, it just would not rev up over 3,000 rpm or so. I think you may have a fuel isssue, possibly a clogged filter. Did you check check the filter inside the tank, the external filter and any filter screen in the carb?
The difference in the stators is the wire lead length and the type of plug connectors.

Re: 76 400 stator issues
Have the crank seals been replaced? It sounds like they need they haven't been. If they have been replaced, i'd say its in the carb or your impulse line is bad.

All new fuel lines and filter. Checked filter in the tank and it is not plugged.
Seals have not been replaced, but don't think that is the problem. The reason I say this is because the muffler is really wet with gas. I think it is because the fuel is not getting burned.
