chrome/stainless resto
chrome/stainless resto
I will need to resto the rear grab bars on my '75 300. They have some minor surface rust and tarnishing. I'm not sure if they are chrome or stainless.....Any ideas on bringing them back?? Thanks

Re: chrome/stainless resto
The grab bars are chrome plated. Depending on the rust, try cleaning them up with SOS pads, which you use wet and then wipe clean. If there is deep rust, it's time for rechroming.

As the bars were used for years on many models you may be able to pick up a mint set of used ones for a fraction of what it costs to chrome yours.
But try cleaning them first. You may be very supprised what you can do in half an hour worth of elbow grease.

DO NOT USE SOS pads....it will scratch and dull
Get some aluminum foil, wad it into a 2 in. ball and get a can of Coke. Pour Coke on the ball to get it wet and rub the ball onto the rusty surface and you will be amazed. Follow up with Turtle Wax Chrome Polish.
This is an old timers trick and I did this on my 63' Impala back in the 80's and it made my bumpers like new...and several other project since.

0000 steel wool works very nice too. It works really good on brass too. It makes brass carb parts look just like new.

I'm not afraid of a little elbow grease. Thanks for the tips. I'll let you know with a few "before-and-afters".

When you go to your hardware store to buy the 0000 (superfine) steelwool make sure it is Stainless Steel Steelwool.
Works great on Chrome and Aluminum.
