ccw 440 spark problem

Post by 2strokedave »

So u finally get the carb rebuilt and now I'm getting no spark on the pto side other cylinder clean as whistle but gas just flows from pto cylinder :( it is a 72 so it has points they look like it just rolled off the assembly line in there but I took a file to them any ways and the gap is good .I think I read that the engine heat makes the ignition coil go bad but that cylinders coil is the farthest from the engine . So I don't really know where to start .has any one had a similar problem? Thanks
BTW the wealth of knowledge on this site is great I'm glad I found it :D

First you need to narrow the problem down.

Swap the red and white wires going to the coils. If the non-firing plug is now the other side, the problem is under the flywheel. If the non-firing plug stays the same, the issue is with the coil, the wire or boot, or the plug.

Ok I messed with it more and according to a light I'm getting both plugs to fire yet the engine will not even attempt to run now its getting gas because after a while of pulling the plugs get wet (i so need to find a starter and the wiring harness that plugs in to the main harness ) so I'm kinda lost on where to begin now .

After filing the points make sure to flush them with starting fluid or brake clean so you flush the filings out of them, then let set for a while to dry..

I used electomotive spray after I filed them should I tear it back apart and clean with the other sprays instead ?

Switch your plug wires around and it will start....

I did try swapping leads and was still not getting it to fire . Is there a way to test the coils with an ohm meter or some thing

I'm not trying to question your intellegence here, but did you put new plugs in the motor? Its been reported that some plugs will fire out in the open, but loose spark under compression. The cross for that sled with the short plugs in it SHOULD be NGK B7HS, (or BR7HS). Again, not trying to insult you, i just find that i myself sometimes look over the simple things looking for a bigger problem.

Yes they are new plugs but they are champion plugs and it ran be it poorly before I cleaned the points but the pto side flooded that's why I cleaned them and your probably right its most likely some thing simple that I just keep over looking.

I belive that the motor came with Champions when new. But plugs can be bad right out of the box or suffer from the misterious "No spark under compression" syndrome.

Speaking of compression, what is yours?

In order to gurgle to life the engine has to have fuel, spark and compression.

You have wet plugs so if your fuel is good that one is covered.
You have spark on both side correct?
But is that spark happening at the correct time. That is why I suggested switching the plug wires around as this is a common problem.
So if you have good and even compression she should bark to life.

Compression I will have to check but it dose feel like good compression when you pull rope ill throw the tester on it and see what the # are

Didn't get the compression tester on it last night but I did find that it sends enough juice to light my light but dose not have enough to fire the plug. Would that be a coil issue or should I check the points again ?

You can check the coils with an ohm meter.

Could be a condensor also.
They are cheap at $5.00 each.

Could be a plug wire also.
Again a $5 part.

Also check for a clean ground connection on the coils to the engine.
