Track/shocks

Post by mpitzen »

My '80 Trailfire's track is fraying on the edges and showing wear. It has been difficult to find a salvage replacement. Thoughts on the aftermarket options? I understand I would have to swap sprockets/make additional mods? Also, I am looking for rear shock - the usual suppliers don't seem to have listings for this application - suggestions? (Anyone have the correct specs on the rear shock?)

By fraying do you mean the rubber part? You'll get a lot of fraying but it can be eliminated by just burning it off. What's important is that there are NO tears or holes in the rubber portion of the track. As to the shock, you most likely won't find any source by asking for a John Deere suspension shock. You need the measurements of the shock, open, closed, bolt eyes and fine one by dimensions. I think Matt's store is looking into some but I'll let him address that. There are other sources but we prefer to patronize Matt.

I have burned the edges of the track; however, it seems that just makes the rubber more brittle and makes the fraying worse. There are no holes, or major cracks, but a couple of the lugs have rips in them, as if they could tear away from the track belt. I think the track has some life, but we do put some miles on the sled with the vintage rides, so I'm trying to determine if I need to tackle this project and convert to a three drive system/solid aftermarket track or if I can get by with the OEM. I understand on the shock - I will wait to hear from Matt. I have measured the specs as acccurately as possible, but I haven't removed the shock yet to verify, so just curious if anyone had good specs.

Thanks for the advice - much appreciated - Mike

OK, not sure how you burned the frays and made the rubber harder but you only need to use a device like a "Candlelighter". Don't use any more heat than necessary. I don't think you'll get a true dimension on the shock without removing it. 4 bolts and the suspension is out (after loosening the track adjusters).
