getting more power outta a kohler 295

Post by liquidatorkid »

i have a kohler AK2952AX serial # 722603093 that came on a jdx4 that had the steel tunnel and pan, i am in the process of making a JD to play on the grass with using a alum jdx8 chassis, for the engine I'm planning on using the kohler 295 i just has a couple questions about getting some more power outta it i believe they make around 25hp stock, it has a walbro butterfly style carb and i wanna convert it to a single round sled or dual mik. round slide carbs, i am planning on giving it a fresh reuild as well

what size mik. round sled would you guys recommend and don't they have an adapter intake boot that would allow me to run a round sled

my second question is where about would i be able to find the jetting specs so i have a starting point?

and y last question is is clutching, i wanna put a 102c off from a 76-77 style LF, they comet 102c should a a 30mm tapered shaft, i was wondering if the kohler 295 have a 30mm tapered shaft as well( haven't gotten the old clutch off yet,

and lastly what cam arms, and clutch spring would work best, i know with my 77 lF i was told a silver clutch spring and R-1 cam arms would make a difference but I'm sure with the engine and different applications they vary

thanks for any info, advice or tips -liquidatorkid

The 102c will fit on the 295. I helped a friend do a mik conversion on his 300 (same motor) a few years ago. I belive wee used a 76 400 LF carb as our start point for the swap, I belive the jetting was fairly close. Or it was close enough to run on, you will also need a throttle block and rubber mounting flange from a cyclone or first gen LF for the swap. That little 300 ran great after the conversion. Let us know how it goes.

A stock Mikuni carb boot will work, but you have to enlarge the holes for the mounting bolts as the ones the Walbros used are larger. I ended up getting Allen head bolts from the hardware store as they fit better than nuts/washers. You'll need a fuel pump too. I used a single VM 34 off an El Tigre 440 (one of a twin setup). Would have to look at jetting, don't remember off hand.
