Polished Tunnel Protection
What, if anything, do you use to protect your tunnel after hours of hand polishing? I polished Bob's 82 tunnel a few months ago and it was never outside but the tunnel "dulled". Sean is working hard polishing his and I don't want him to go through the same thing.

Re: Polished Tunnel Protection
I believe the only way to stop the oxidation process is to prevent it from coming in contact with air. Clear coat is commonly used on Aluminum to stop this process, ie automotive wheels are clear coated. I believe they make a product for powder coating aluminum that would be clear. Check with your local powder coater, they may have the answer.
Re: Polished Tunnel Protection
I do not consider myself an expert on aluminum because it is a whole differant animal, but I have been painting cars for a living for twenty years and in my opinion clearcoating would be a short term fix . It would look great for a little while but it can be very prone to peeling and especially sensitve to fuel. And if you think polishing stinks stripping the clear back off really ruins a weekend. I have had my best luck with semi truck wheel polishes you still have to apply about once a year but they are very durable and not too expensive and available at most truck stops. Hope this helps

Maybe a coat of wax after you polish it?

Re: Polished Tunnel Protection
Thanks everyone for the input. I have to agree that frequent waxing should do the trick as long as they don't get too slippery......wait....forget that!!! It's Sean's sled. See you later I have to start waxing......Using carnuba.

DA,
If you had the tunnels chromed, the problem would be solved.

Re: Polished Tunnel Protection
Don, Don't worry about the slipperiness, I have some slip resisters in stock that I can put on!!!!
Chroming the tunnel is a very interesting thought. I wonder if I can get "spinners" for my bogie wheels and a neon green under mount light. That would be a pretty cool ride.

I'm sure it would be expensive, but it would be so pretty....
