Two sleds & a JD trailer for sale in the Green magizine

Post by ICCSF 108 »

I've been told that there are two 72 Deere sleds & a JD Trailer for sale someplace in IN. per the Sept. issue of the Green Magazine.. I'd be interested in the trailer if someone else wants the sleds

This is a very, very cool magizine if you are into pre 1985ish Deere stuff, although not a lot of sled stuff is featured. Our own Greg Stephen (deeredr) writes a monthly column for them as well. Mr Thinker has always been my favorite part although it is somewhat of a mystery as to who writes it. My subscription ran out a few years ago and i never renewed it, i really need to. Check it out.

A couple of years ago I contacted the magazine about submitting a story about the Deere guys, and the Vintage Challenge. After receiving encouragement from the editor, Rainville and I put together a story and it was submitted.
After that, the editor wouldn't so much as reply to me, and the story never ran as far as I know. I've since been told that any event which is not 100% JD, will not get a mention in the Magazine. I think that is short sighted, but hey, life goes on. :usa:

thats deeres attitude toward their ugly past , if you ask for a bearing for a 1942 manure spreader the parts guys will stand on their heads to find it but walk in with the part number for a jackshaft bearing and mention its for a sled and the he will have a seizure trying to pick it out of the parts bin ,just my local experiences wade

I'd say Wade hit it right on the head with how Deere feels about any, for lack of a better term, past failure. I personally don't think they failed at all with the sleds, but for some reason that's always how they act when you mention the sleds. I wonder if they act the same way now if you ask them about an ATV part lol Oh well at least they still make the manuals and stuff for us so I guess we can't complain to much right?

My dealer chuckles at me but is very helpful. We just have a "understanding" that he does not have any NOS parts LOL.

Keep in mind that alot of people to this day don't know that John Deere made snowmobiles. However you mention 4020 and they say oh yeah we had one of those!

On parts through John Deere, I've had the best luck looking up what I need on Deere's parts web site. Once I have the part number, I search that part number to see what else it was used on. Then I call the dealer and tell him I'm looking for part number such and such. Sometimes he may ask what's this on? So I tell him it's other application such as a manure spreader or lawn tractor and you get your part! Mention snowmobile and you will hear a dial tone! Of course if your parts man is a true parts man he'll do some digging for you.

T-roy (of course) is right. Use your skills and look up the part number(s) for the dealer and it'll go much smoother.

Felt I had to throw my two cents in about Green Magazine

I love the magazine and have very much enjoyed writing articles in it for well over the last ten years. That being said, I took it upon myself to carry the Deere sleds back to the masses so to speak by throwing in sled references whenever possible as well as several Deere snowmobile themed articles. Mostly I write articles on vintage new old stock parts from my inventory that I take pictures of and then discuss. Other times it's about an odd piece of literature, machine, tool or whatever. For example the next article deals with a 1919 John Deere dealer contract with Deere.
I talked to Matt about one I wrote about NOS John Deere sled tachs as I took one of each that I had in stock and told about them. I keep meaning to send a copy to him to archive if he wants.
So anyway it's been a tough go on the snowmobile talk but it's getting much much easier every year. As it's getting colder it's about time for me to sneak more sled info into a few articles.

Brian, when did you submit that article again? I wish I had known as I could maybe have run interference for you on it. Maybe it's not too late? Let me know.

I know what you mean about most parts men not wanting to be bothered with sled parts requests today. In the 30 years I was a Deere dealer and parts man I took every request seriously, whether it was a part for a new utility tractor, a lawn tractor, a 1927 model D tractor or a snowmobile. Helping the customer was job one. Sadly today in too many dealerships that no longer seems to be the case. We were known for helping with all equipment, new or old, and that got us extra business.

So far as Mr. Thinker goes, he is definitely a man of mystery and is made up of more than one person when need be. His wry take on most inquiries is humorous at best and absolutely devastating at worst. Mr. Thinker does not suffer fools lightly that is for sure!
