I wonder if a JD 600 with the 18" wide track would get the power to the ground better?

Old sleds are hours of entertainment.... then you get to ride them for a little bit.

Re: Why no grass dragging of our Deeres?
What are you planning on using for a cooling system? i'm thinking that that radiator isn't gonna do it....

Re: Why no grass dragging of our Deeres?
Ed i sent you an email with some questions about the jdx,
JD600 as far as the cooling system, i am planning on running just the radiator up front because i didn't wanna run the second gen heat exchangers under the seat if i didn't have to, with studding the track, and eventually maybe building a different rear skid depending on how well the bogie's hook up. it does have the tunnel protectors underneat the tunnel
this is the way that i thought about the idea of using the 82 lf radiator, think of as your basic l/c 2 stoke dirt bike they have just a radiator up front that air can flow over, as well as the air can flow over the entire engine, with the square hole in the front of the hood it is allowing as much air flow to run though the hood over the pipes and over the engine keeping it cool, in between races i am planning on using a fan , the track that I'm gonna be racing it at is either 500 or 600 feet can't remember off the top of my head but i don't plan on running it any more then i have to for the races, like i said i am new the the world of grass dragging but figured id take on the challenge of building a deer just for that bc's its something that you don't see out there on the track very often in this area exspecailly

The expansion chamber was custom made for this engine at Deere in Horicon under Lee's guidance.

It just seems to me like if you are ONLY worried about going 600 feet, there is absolutely no reason to waste valuable weight on a liquid cooled jug and head, radiator, water pump, and coolant. If set up identically, i would say you'll see little if any difference between a cyclone and a liquifire in that short of a run....

What do you plan to do about a clutch guard? Most places I know require and open mod sled like yours to have a fully enclosed clutch guard.

Re: Why no grass dragging of our Deeres?
I think some of the guys that run liquid cooled engines just have quick couplers. They "plug" into a cooler that has a circulation pump to cool the engine when they get back to the pits, much like Pro Stock drag cars. An engine driven water pump is lost HP.JD600 wrote:It just seems to me like if you are ONLY worried about going 600 feet, there is absolutely no reason to waste valuable weight on a liquid cooled jug and head, radiator, water pump, and coolant. Maybe my comment is a little over the top. In the end as long as you have fun with the sled that's all that really matters.

Re: Why no grass dragging of our Deeres?
i wanted to build the jdx with what parts i had available to me, what i could afford, using my skills and knowledge to make a JD that was different from the rest of the other sleds that show up to the local grass drags, seems like you always seem the same chassis's showing up, Polaris tx's, txl's, ski doo tnt's, citations, arctic cat pantera's, panthers, puma's etc... your basic sleds, with each individuals custom work and touches. i wanted to build something different from the rest of the crowd, you rarely see a bogie wheel sled on the track, let along a john deere showing up to race.
To me it isn't about winning a trophy, or a plaque (those are what we are running for no $cash prizes. To me its the pride of building a sled with my own two hands from the ground up, in my small back yard. seeing it all come together while giving it my own personal custom touches, as if i where racing back in the day, i built it to the "style" of sleds that i like, meeting the rules and reg. the rules for the track state "A sled must be equipped with a working teather, working brakes, and a clutch guard..that pretty much leaves the rest up in the air.
if i wanted to i could run a cooler i may build one, with the lines, pump, and quick connects for the cooling system to hook up after the end of each run,
as far as the clutch guard, i am planning on modifying the existing clutch guard that's on the jdx, making it wider to cover past the end of the clutch, and I'm gonna cap off the end of it for my own safety and everyone else's safety as well
like i said this isn't a high dollar winner takes all style event, its an event for the locals to come out and run the sleds that they have built, as well as meet up with old friends and have a good time, that's what is all about is having fun i mean if it wasn't fun then i wouldn't be doing do it
i just wanted to say thank you to everone that has given me tips, and advice on building this sled, i am planning on giving it its first run friday afternoon in the hayfields of jasper ny, imm take some pics of the testing

Re: Why no grass dragging of our Deeres?
thanks DE im really looking forward to seeing how well she does in the open class im sure it wont be easy running against the other mod sleds who knows what will show up, atleast ill have a starting point and know what the area's i need to improve are. my frend has a polaris centurion with triple aaen, its all stock besides the pipes and its been jetted its an impressive sled and i believe it may be in the open class as well but not 100% sure, he's always ripping on me about jd's being heavy and slow and i rip on him about his poalris's falling apart so its an on going battle between 2 good friends haha, this should be a great learning exspernce for me as well as other jd collectors that are looking into getting started in grass drags,
i hope to see more people bringing out the jd's for events such as grass drags, oval races, and events like those ill make sure i get plenty of pics to share

I was just looking at the ISR drag rules and keep in mind that the official maximum length is 500 feet...clutch accordingly boys!
By the way...I am glad to see the kid is going as far as he is...
Gives me hope that vintage sleds will live on in the future!!!

Re: Why no grass dragging of our Deeres?
as far as clutching, the only advice that i have gotten about setting up as a good starting point for a KEC-440/23LC and the 102c is to run a silver clutch spring, and R-1 cams, been trying to find more info on clutching tips ect... but havn't had the best of luck, i guess its one of those kinda things that you have to have a starting point and tune it in from there.

Re: Why no grass dragging of our Deeres?
in a couple weeks im planning on starting mocking up a 73 chaparral thunderbird with a 18" wide trck and a liquid cooled 550 outta a 96 arctic cat cougar. rumor has it the engine makes about 90hp on a light weight chappy frame, alum skid. drag skis and any other part i can get thats alum as well as i did some homework on picking track it woild take 188 studs to have 4 per row in each section of the track. that outta be a rocket haha shooting to have it done for later in the season grass drags maybeCabindweller wrote:I wonder if a JD 600 with the 18" wide track would get the power to the ground better?
