I would stay away from any kawi powered sled, i have never been able to keep them running. run the 78 or the 340s. just mount a xtra cdi next to the original so you can plug in the next one as they burn out. the ccw sleds seem more reliable to me. Bryan

I gotta say, this seems really off-base. There are plenty of Kawasaki powered sleds that run a looooong time, and as a one-day mileage comparison to the race, a bunch of them have finished the Vintage Challenge multiple times, which is more then can be said for any 340/s. Not to downplay the awesomeness of a 340/s, but they're clearly tricky to keep running.

I dont think its off base to first pick the most reliable sled to finish a race as long as a leg of the I-500. I would definitely trust my 340s before a kawi powered liquifire. A 340s chassis and a 78 cyclone single carb 340 would be even better yet. I dont believe most people are expecting to win the race but finishing would be a win for me. Keep the sleds simple. Bryan

ive thought about the 78 cyclone idea too. i think kenny was really onto something building one . the paint scheme was never my favorite on them but that really doesnt matter in this instance . "keep the sleds simple" may be a motto to live by . wade

I have NO experience racing, but I agree that simple is better. It's just less to go wrong. Parts availabity has to play a huge factor in what sled a guy elects to race. Parts for the Kawi powered sleds are still readily available. Also with several guys racing the Kawi powered Liquifires if you need something in a pinch they may be able to help you out. As with everything, I think testing is huge. The more seat time a guy can get the more bugs you can shake out prior to the race. I think that would also help you learn the characteristics of the sled. With modifications made to enhance handling it may take awhile to learn how a sled will react in certain situations and expose you machines strengths and weaknesses. Good Luck to you guys. If it was easy everybody would do it!

Matt is dead on here. Neither the 340/S or Dators have a terrific record for finishing the VC because both are finicky. Also, parts are hard to find.

Well good luck to the vintage racers, but if someone doesn't make it to the start line or wants to stick around for day 3 I need a gas man! Rainville just isnt reliable enough :wall:

WHAT !!! 340/s not finishing VC. The most finickey part back then was the clutches. The way the rules are read for this race you can make this slead finish and keep on going clear back to wisconsin. It is a very reliable slead, just steer clear of the trees!!

Wade, friend to friend, concentrate on one and one only. Otherwise you'll have two half finished.

will be nice to have the spare sled on the trailor (78 lf)also will be super cool to see a 340s at the starting line,i see no reason why those two sleds wont be finished by the time the snow flies here in indiana, chris
