1979 John deere Trialfire 340 Problem

Post by JDFanatic19 »

I'm having trouble with my trailfire. it started with quick start down the carb, But wont stay running. It has good spark, over 120 compression in both cylinders. So is it my fuel pump or something else?

well i tryed a different pump. it got the gas in the line but it wont go to carb. It putts but wont start fully. i took carb apart and the bowl had gas in it. but i took bottom off, and the needle in the jet under that gold float dropped on the ground. its the one that has a pin that goes through it. would that cause it as well? :wall:

I would pull the carb off, disassemble, clean, inspect and then reassemble per specifications in the manual. You want to make sure all the passages are clear, and that all the parts are accounted for. I bought a Traifire 2 years ago that would load up all the time. I found out after taking the carb apart that it didn't have a pilot jet in it. I would also buy a rebuild kit for fuel pump and do a rebuild on the fuel pump. Other wise you might be chasing your tail all winter.

I would make sure the crank seals are good and the line that goes from the crankcase to the fuel pump isn't cranked and in good shape.

I second replacing the impulse line from the crank to the carb cuz that can definitely keep it from pumping gas right.

another consideration nwould be crank seals , bad seals can cause all kinds of goofy runability issues . getting these items renewed /replaced will give you a great foundation to begin to fine tune your machine

You surely have a blown crank seal bud. You gotta get them changed out before you distroy that engine. it will only set you back about $10 and it will onl take a few hours. The crank seals are also a major factor in fuel pump performance. Hope this helps.

but would that explain it will still not start with spraying gas into carb? it will putt sometimes, it will almost start sometimes. and sometimes you can hear a burst of air sometimes when it putts

yep it would.
Blown crank seals got let the cylinder pull the fuel up into the combustion chamber.

get them changed.
