got a few more pages of john deere racing info.

Post by sledder670 »

My friend was going through some more old folders and found some nice info. It is a 440/21 or 440/22 reed valve engine hop up. This was sent from Steve Longval that talked to Lee Hartesty at the horican factory. It was a set up for drag racing, not sure if it was ice or grass. I have set of the special carb flanges i have a picture attached not for sale. I will try to get the paper work scanned and posted. Talks about using 295/s carbs and jetting. How to modify the 75 jdx8 or 800 expansion chamber. As well as porting and using clutch kit AM53476. This info should be very helpful to the guys talking about grass dragging a midmount engine. Also I have one page on 340/S engine mods porting work to bring it to 55 HP at 8750 rpms as well installing dator carbs and modifing the expansion chamber.

Very cool!! What is the theory on same mains on a oval racer and a richer pto side on the CC sled? I run a richer main pto on my dual carbed cyclone to keep from running to hot. Great find !!! Thanks Dave

I've been in possession of the 340/S hop-up info for 5 or 6 years now I think. While I thought it was very interesting from a historical perspective, I've never had the slightest inclination to pursue using it.

When these sleds were being raced, they went through a ton of parts. Jon talks about loading dumpsters with discarded parts for a couple of days when they broke camp at the end of the season. And remember, in CC racing, the engines were stock!

With production sled parts getting scarcer each passing year, and race sled parts made of unobtainium, it just doesn't make any sense to me to hop up these engines. Now some of the guys here certainly have the experience and the disposable income to play around at stuff like this. For you younger guys that are looking between the couch cushions for beer money, this is not a good idea. My suggestion would be to go practice your hop-up ideas on Polaris sleds til you get it figured out. :bonk:

Brad; thanks for posting this, we can't get enough of this stuff.

ya I think the 340/s info was for the guys looking to set them up for grass dragging, since in my area there was 3 or 4 guys that grass dragged john deeres from the freeport dealership in those days. As far as the HP on the 440 engine hop up my friend thought they use to see low 60's upper 50's on a track dyno. But who knows what else they had done as well. I love this old race stuff now like with my skidoo you can go buy the racing handbook.
