I find three different part numbers for stators on cyclone, liquifire, dator and late 400 model sleds. Anyone know the difference, are they interchangeable?

Re: Stators
Don,
The difference is the length of the wires and the type of connectors.
-75 800 / JDX8 had very long wire leads and a rectangle plug
-76 400 had the same as above
-76 Cyclone had long wires(shorter than above listing) and a rectangle plug
-76 Liquifire has shorter wire leads than the Cyclone and a rectangle plug
-77 Cyclones and Liquiires changed over to round plug and I believe were interchangeable
you can convert any of the rectangle plug set-ups to round by adapting the connectors or replacing both the stator and cdi box as a set. The color code is the same for both stlyes.

Re: Stators
Hi Don.
The '76 and early '77 sleds had a rectange plug with short wires. The later '77 and '78 sleds had 2 smaller round plugs with short wires. It is my personal belief that they changed to the round plugs because they will fit through the hole in the crank case should the stator need to be changed. The midmount sleds had square plugs with extra long wire leads to reach the CDI box mounted on the firewall. They are interchangable if you splice the plugs you need onto it. The wire colors are all the same. Good luck.

Dang it. Pat beat me AGAIN! Looks like we pretty much covered the same info however.

Re: Stators
The plug style was changed to a more water resistant, rubber enclosed type. The cdi box was improved as well.

Re: Stators
You guys are terrific, walking, talking, encylopedias on J D SLEDS!
Well I need to replace one, used or rebuilt that is the question.
Interesting sidelight to this, the one on my 340 only reads 1.3 ohms and it starts and runs fine!

Re: Stators
I know what you mean, I have a 78 Cyclone that had low readings like yours but I change the stator anyway since I trail ride it.

Re: Stators
Installed a new stator from HewTech and that 440 fired off right now!
Just a flip of the key. Sweet!
Thanks for the help.

Re: Stators
Don and jdsleders,
Buying a Hewtech rewownd stator and fireplug CDI box is money in bank when it comes to replacing the failure prone Pretolite CDI's. I put one set of them on my Dator and was very pleased with the result. It ran smoother and started better, as Scott Hewlett said it would.
