Kohler 295 dies when warm

Post by stevenh »

Hi everyone, I rebuilt a Kohler 295 in a 300 and it runs like a top until it gets warmed up then runs erratic, backfires and will die until it cools down again. I'm thinking it is a bad condesor or a poor soldering job leaving a poor connection. Am I on the right track? Thanks, Steven.

You may well be on the right track.
Stators failure can happen when the engine gets warmed up.

Also check to make sure the exhaust system is not partialy plugged up with acrons, grass or whatever.

Confirm that the head cooling fins and passages are not blocked with debris from mice or wasps.

Check your fan belt condition and tension also.

I always kinda thought when a condensor went they just plain went...sounds like a coil issue to me, or possibly stator...get it nice and hot and see if you lose spark on both plugs...that would lead you more to the stator/points side of things, if your just losing on one you may want to look at a coil first..their pretty inexpensive and easy to chage...more so then pulling the flywheel to do condensors

So I got a set of new coils to try before going any deeper. I believe I got the correct ones 01-143. The box says Kimpex 279649. Anyway after installing them I have no spark (checked with timing light), put the old ones back in and have spark. What's going on? I checked the primary and secondary resistance as per the manual and the new ones check out ok.

Thanks

I took the coils off today and tightened up the blade connectors, emory clothed all the grounding points and the new coils are still completely dead. Put the old ones back in and even put in a really corroded one out of a parts sled and they make perfect spark. I think I got 2 bad coils even though they are brand new.
