I am restoring a sled and am wondering where you guys get your oversized pistons and rings for a 340/5 CCW-Kiortz?
Is there any brands that crossover?

Our beloved engines were also used in some Scorpions, Skiroules, Raiders and a few other brands in the same era.
KEC, Kioritz and CCW are all the same thing.

By the response I'm I'm thinking pistons maybe are no longer available?
I thought maybe Kimpex, Weisco etc. might have a crossover number or the pistons might be the same as another brand of motor.
I was thinking of getting 440 jugs and boring them because I believe the oversized pistons for a 440/5 are still available and put them on.

The 440 & 440/5 are piston ported engines. They were used in the 500 & 600 models. These pistons are very tough to find!

So I guess my best bet is to rebuild the crank. New gaskets and put the original piston and rings back in and hope for the best?

there are some 400 pistons floating around , they look to me to be the same as the 340/5 and 440/5 only with the different diameter , im curious to know if the 60mm jugs would bore to 65 its 2.5, per sidewall may work ?? dont know wade

Wade, that's a good point. I've wondered if that was possible or not as well. Not sure how much meat has to be left in the cylinder for reliabilty.
You may try posting a add in the classifieds for oversized 340 pistons. You just never know what people have stashed away. Other options would be finding NOS cylinders. They do show up for sale from time to time. Like Todd stated these weren't used in just John Deere. Sleeving your old cylinders or having the cylinders coated may be an option. Rainville was telling that Mellinium Technologies offers a coating Nikacil???? that can be applied to old bores to bring them back to OEM specs. You could reuse your old pistons with any of these options if they are still good.

there has been an nos clylinder one side or the other on ebay for ever not sure if the other side could be found or not i have extra rings for the 09-035 pistons like pj is using in the 340/s motors not sure if they will work in the oem slugs or not wade

This summer I rebuilt my 340/5 and it needed rings bad!
I was also rebuilding my boys 340 cyclone at the same time. The rings looked identical so I measured everything to see if maybe it would work...worst thing that could have happened is I get an extra set of rings for his sled.
Anyways I looked up the part number for the Cyclone, made a post and bought some that were NOS from Bill in Duluth (the part number I bought from him was a substitute for a 340 cyclone piston ring kit # AM54225...PM me and I will send you his email address)
...cleaned the pistons and ring grooves thoroughly...they fit perfectly!
In his email he said he had a lot of those kits.
By the way...does anybody know if we have a post around here that shows what parts cross reference to old parts? I've seen the brake band post, and Kenny let me know about the 340/S base gasket being the same for the 295/S, but do we have a full list somewhere for other parts?

robin not to argue what you have had success with but the 340 cyclone is 58 mm bore and the 340/5 is 60 mm bore thats a ton of difference in bore like .080 which would give you about .250 of ring end gap my thoughts wadejdxrobin wrote:This summer I rebuilt my 340/5 and it needed rings bad!

...piston installation 101...make sure the end gaps of the rings are not too big...
I never even checked that the bore was different between the engines. CCW, Kioritz...both 340cc,...same jug gaskets...what could possibly go wrong.
Here is the odd thing, I believe (famous last words) I checked the end gap of the new rings and it was identical to the old rings. I would have used the piston upside down to assure the ring was square in the bore.
You are right, it comes out to .248" difference around the bore between the two. I am thinking either I was just plain sloppy, or possibly the jugs were changed.
I have been a Quality Manager at a machine shop for too many years. I can eyeball .010" consistently, I would hope I would notice a 1/4 inch gap...unless of course I didn't look!
At any rate, I will be looking at the jug head numbers, maybe even pulling the heads off, just to make sure.
You may have helped me avert a major issue...owe you big.

Ok, lets do this.
Does your 340/5 have reed valves? I'm betting that it does. If it does, its actually a 340/22 with a 340/5 fan tower on it. Thats the only way this will work. I'm guessing this because the 340/5 cylinder gaskets do not look even remotely close to the 340/22. other than that, the rings would have probably never fit on those bigger pistons as they would have been much too tight.

We decided to rebuild the crank. Cleaned the cylinders up, they look good. Re-use the pistons, new std. rings, gaskets etc.
For the few times a year it gets used it should be fine.

Well...
I've got to come clean. I pulled the jug and I am here to tell you that yes, a 58mm piston ring will fit just fine on a 60mm piston...and it looks pretty close to a 1/4" gap on the ends!
The good thing is that the engine is actually something I do not have anything to put in, because I got a 440 from DA to put in my X4. Guess I will just keep looking for the right rings.
