ring gear

Is the ring gear on the flywheel really needed if you dont have electric start?I am doing a restore on an 80 trailfire, working on the engine right now just wondering if anybody knows.

The ring gear came with the flywheels on engines that had optional electric start.

I know that but is it really needed. I want to take it off for weight .

I wouldnt mess with trying to take the ring gear off, the flywheel is balanced and im not positive but i think it is balanced WITH the ring gear ON, taking the ring gear off could throw your flywheel off balance.
