Andy:

You stated one thing that comes to my mind that I had forgotten about. That is the comment stuck engine.

When I first got the sled and got it running after doing numerous upgrades I had a problem. I had the sled running and then walked away from it for about a month. I then had a problem, I could not pull the engine over. The only way to turn the motor over was by hand, and this was to turn it by hand using the clutch. After that problem, the motor never stuck again. This was one time only. I have since rode this sled all last winter and not one major problem.

The sled had sat outside under a deck since 1983 and was covered. It went back into service last year.

Got some more info tonight off line from an old Harley Davidson/ 2 cycle engine mechanic from the 1970's. This is his opinion.

The high compression is from carbon deposits sitting on top of the pistons. Remedy is to mist water into the carb while running the engine at high enough RPM's so it dont die and this will shock the carbon deposits and blow them out the exhaust or pull the head and scrape the crap off. He stated that the head gasket can be reused by annealing the gasket. This mean if the gasket is heated red hot and dropped in cold water, this will cause the gasket to swell and to be re-used. Torque specs to him is like Andy stated, he recommended 35 ft lbs.

The carb problem, he swears that a very, very fine piece of debris is in the low idle adjustment jet. Possibly even a little fuzz ball from a shop rag could cause the problem. We shall see, I hope I missed something.

I said the low circuit and more and more Im certain on that could be a peice of the old gasket too and if you blow compressed air in it might just jam it in more.

I just cant imagine enough carbon to make that much compresion but it is the most likely suspect. If you wanted to get real technical the carbon on top effects the compresion ratio not necasarily the psi. Follow me kinda like say you have 1 V8 with 9.0:1 pistons and another with 11.5:1 you realisticaly could still have the same PSI readings in both depending on the condition of the motor. I dont think you need to do that to reuse the headgaskets but suppose it wont hurt. Ive reused metal haed gaskets on sled motors many times with out trouble.

This is also a very remote possibility people in 1 lunger racing and probably with twin cylinders to sometimes leave the gaskets right out to raise compresion. I know its done on single cylinder sachs motors but dont know if it works on any others.

The water thing will work just like when you have a blown headgasket on a car the piston in the leaky cylinder gets nice and clean.

I know the water injection method is an old mechanic's trick but to use it on 2 stroke engines could be harmful to the crank bearings.

I think Pat makes a good point there, water is the last thing you want to expose the innards of your crankcase to.

Paul, what all did you do to clean the carb all those times you had it apart? If you did not already, when it is apart, you should try soaking the whole thing in carb cleaner for a while, then try blowing out the passages again.

I soaked it in carb cleaner with the carb all apart, cant think of the name of this stuff but it comes in 5 gallon buckets, they dont make this stuff anymore. I let is soak for about 12 hours and then washed it off with water, blew it dry with shop air.

Any recomendations on how to clean up the heads prior to reassembly?? Pressure washing them, solvent tank or just leave them alone??

Carb cleaner 2+2 will remove most of the carbon might need some help from a wire brush.
