77 liquifire tach no functioning properly

Post by johndeerejamie »

just installed a new tach on my sled, plugged it in, put the ground on and it seems to have some life only problem is when its idling it just goes right to 8000 and stays there...as high as it goes.

Are you sure y have the right tach? The earlier sleds with a Prestolite ignition require the older style tach with a fuse on it. The newer sleds tach do not have the fuse. I'm just wondering if possibly you have a tach for a later sled and that's why it's not working.

Thanks,
Brian

Sorry to say but you bought the wrong tach for your '77 340 Liq. As 80spitfire stated, the correct tach will have a inline fuse. That style tach was used on all the Kioritz engines that had cdi ignition from 75 thru 78.

Shoot I was hoping I wasn't right for your sake lol As far as for getting the right tach, I think you're probably best off just getting a used one of of ebay because those tachs have become very difficult to find in NOS.

Thanks,
Brian

Wade is correct. The tach runs off the lighting coil, the points ignition sleds, and the Kawi powered ones both use a "shoe" type coil. The Kioritz powered sleds with CDI ignition use a circular muti-pole stator. The tach counts the impulses, so the two types require different tachs.

johndeerejamie,
As Brian stated, the tach that you bought will only work with the early CCW and later Kioritz engines with POINTS and the later Kawi powered FIRE-SERIES for the reasons stated above.
The Kioritz engine that you have (KEC 340/LC) requires a different tach since it has a cdi ignition system. The external inline fuse is an "indicator" as to the type of tach it is. They are wired differently internally.

Are you referring to the early CCW 340 with points?
