Where would the VIN number be on a Cyclone 440?

Post by flattracker23 »

I just got a Cyclone 440 and want to know where I would find the VIN number on it so I can see what year it is.

Kevin is right on, it should be down by where your right foot would sit.

Just in case you don't have the s/n breakdown:
50,001- 1976 Mean Green, steel skid, refective Deere on side of hood
70,001- 1977 same appearance, no reflective Deere sticker on side of hood, reduced mass, more alumium underhood
80,001- 1978 Bright Emerald Green, aluminum skid frame.

I hope this helps,

I know that is where it should be but there is not a plate on the right side of the tunnel. Would it be anywhere else?

More than likely it was removed or painted over. You may be able to see the indentation of the original stamping on the inside of the tunnel. Another possibility is it was a replacement tunnel that was not stamped as required after it was installed.

Joe hit all the indicators except the lower portion of the coil mount on the 76 cyclone bolts between the carb and spacer. The 77/78 mount above the carb.
With all the info given, you can easily determine the year by the looks of the sled.

This thread caught my interest because I have a '78 spitfire that doesn't have a vin # or the Canada certification sticker either. It's not painted over, ground out or worn off, it just doesn't have either of 'em. Never thought about the tunnel being replaced.

If there is no VIN number in the tunnel, it's most likely a replacement unit. When I started to restore my 340/s a few years ago, Lindner asked me what my serial number was. Turned out it didn't have one. I ended up trading to another collector who likes that for one with a serial number so it would be easier to register once restored.
