Re: Eagle River WI Vintage Races
I'm the driver on the cyclone. I ended up finishing 3rd,based on others being disqualified. Both of the polaris txc's were thrown out. The tx looking one, had a 440 tx free air pipe on it. The red one had a indy sport 488cc motor with a tuned pipe on it also. It's pretty frustrating when the obvious goes unchecked. I'm anything but stupid when looking at these sleds in the pits. The first place merc had hand made intake tubes between the cyl's and carbs, and gutted exhaust. He got away with a slap on the wrist,because of his last name. The ss 440 hade a srv 540 bottom end, claiming he had no idea. They did nothing. When they tech'd my sled, I'm the one who offered to take off my hood. Sorry about the negative stuff, i,m just venting. There were 6 heats in the 440 fan class, probably around 60 sleds, they took top 5 in heats. Then 5 quarter finals, taking top 4. Two semi's taking top 5. It's no easy task going to the finals. The only sponsor that i have is myself. I built the sled from the ground up, and did not farm out one task. The motor is not the problem,it's the primary, and secondary clutches. Finding a good combination is proving very difficult. My gearing is very low at 2.05 to 1. I'm geared for around 69 to 70 mph. running a 54 weights with an almond gold polaris spring. At ironwood i ran 7760 rpm, and only 7280 at ER. The sled really pulled hard at 3/4 track, much to late. The class speed is around 62 to 65 mph. If anyone has any ideas on clutching, I,d love to hear it. I'm very suspicious of the secondary also, the shallow cam may be hurting acceleration. Any ideas at all would be appreciated. Thanks, Justin.

Re: Eagle River WI Vintage Races
Well that stinks.
Of course, no one else at the track will know the truth. I have 2 thoughts on the rules:
- Check all setups in the pit (by someone who knows what the heck they are looking at!) BEFORE the race.
- If you cheat, you do not come back next year, and the rest of your sleds are DQ'd also!
Darn fine piece of driving there monketstew! Excellent cornering!
My buddy there that did the work on at least 6 sleds (motor/clutch) tells me that sometimes
too high can be just as bad as too low RPM.
For example:
7700 = 92hp
7600 = 100hp
7500 = 95hp
I know there is a lot more to it than that, but trial & error is a big help. Now if you could just race against "non-cheaters"....
From that 1st picture on here, (your 1st heat) you were the only one with the skiis off the ground at the start.
Good timing & good setup. Good luck in the future!
