JDX FIRST RIDE!!!!

Post by Mr. Deere »

Well I had the JDX out for the first time in god knows how long this past weekend. I am having some issues tho. Upon Pulling the plugs I found my fan side plug was white and my Clutch side plug was black. I was talking with JDRob and he thought maybe my PTO side seal was leaking and pulling more fuel into that cylinder?? I also noticed oil spitting out of the exhaust joints. that might be caused by the 40:1 mix tho. I made a little video of the sound as it almost seems like the timing off again. When its cold and it starts if you hold it at like 4k it sounds like a harley. if you let it idle it surges and wont idle smooth. If you run it and stop to let it rest it wont come back down to idle unless you wack throttle. Sometimes it'll even creep back up. It starts ok warm. It also has a wicked Mikuni bog like all the Liquifires have. This thing rips! It suprised the heck outta me and i almost rolled it when i pinned it! Also what would a symptom of bad reeds be? Could that make it run lean? Thanks Here is the video I made. I have tomorrow off so i can make another one. I may try to change the PTO seal again and see what happens. I can also take pics of the plugs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjmeJwcL ... e=youtu.be

The timing can be a trick to get right on these. It sounds to me like your points on one side are out of adjustment. If your points gaps are not perfect, it will affect the ignition timing on the side that is off. How did you set the timing Bob? Do you have the proper tools for this?

Dustin I set it with the Flashlight tester and lots of help from 400brian. Brian it was when I checked it after it went all back together. Do you think that's it? The plug had a streak of black on it. I sprayed the whole motor after I did the seals and I didnt hear any difference so timing makes sense.

If Brian walked you through it, its probably right. He probably doesn't remember this, but he walked me through timing my first points engine too.

Don't mess with the reeds unless you know what you're looking at Bob. Its unlikely that they are to blame. What plugs are you running, and are they new?

If there is black goo running out of the exhaust, its a good bet that one cyl is not firing.

Its getting fuel, thus the goo. The black plug may have fouled on start up. You had this thing running once, I would check the obvious stuff before I went nuts.

I have BR9HS plugs in her now. I will check the spark and snap some pics and hopefully a better video of the surging. It almost seems like it droppes the cylinder at idle. When you pin it this thing throws you back.

Well Finally some good news! I think i fixed a big problem! Pulled number 2 wire off while sled was running and it died instantly. Pulled plugs to check spark and found Number 2 Cylinder was not sparking. Swapped plugs and still nothing!! put the 2 new NGK's I had in and spark on both cylinders now. I had a junk plug out of the package!! That would explain the fouled plug. I also think the 2 new ones I put in are bad too. The old one that did work in Cylinder 1 has a way nicer hotter looking spark then both the new ones I put in. I dont know why it would be like that? It runs A lot better and when you pull the wires off it does kinda sputter and run telling me both cylinders are firing. There is still a little oil at the ball joint as it fits extremely loose, but not nearly as bad as it was. I have to try and tighten the pipe up a little better. I still think the time is off a little. It wont start warm sometimes if you dont get it on the second pull. Sometimes you have to choke it too. It still surges a little at idle and wont come back down untill you whack the throttle. It bogs still also. I might have to fine tune the carb tho cause when Matt gave it back he said the adjustments are rough. Maybe that's all that's wrong now. I am keeping a close eye on plug color now and am ordering a few more sets. I made a little walk around video to show you how it sits now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2cnyVNc ... e=youtu.be

Yea I think so too. I've tried to set it so many times but i keep getting same result! You think a sled shop would be able to figure it out? Either that or i set the points back at .014 and see what happens.

Bob,

How far advanced are they set right now? Where is your gap set? Did you set the gap on both sides?

Thats probably your problem then Bob. Thats actually in the most advanced part of the High Alt. range. I've played with mine quite a bit, and i've found that it runs best at about 0.015 BTDC. Thats there i would start.
