So I should loosen it all up and retime it to .015. So I follow the same steps?

Every engine is differnet Bob, thats just where mine runs best. I would loosen it and retard it in small increments.

Ok so dont touch the Point gaps and just loosen the whole stator plate and move it back.

any time that you adjust the timing, you need to recheck the points.

Re: JDX FIRST RIDE!!!!
The X8s also tend to idle rich at the book settings, and I think the 73 was the worst.
I had to lean mine significantly to make it idle without fouling plugs. Also, once hot, the idle would hunt up and down.
I turned the idle mix in 1/4 - 1/2 from the book settings. Now I have to keep some choke on for a while until it warms up, and I didn't have to do that before. But, I no longer foul plugs at start up, and it idles fine hot.

Please clarify? IMHO, once the timing is set, you MUST leave the points alone!JD600 wrote:any time that you adjust the timing, you need to recheck the points.

Brian im a little confused on your post. Do you think I should Lean it out? How do you think it sounds? Would you agree the timings off?

Re: JDX FIRST RIDE!!!!
Bob, it sounds OK to me, idle is a bit high. After it is well warmed up, try leaning the idle mix screw ( the one on the side of carb ) and see what that does. You need it lean enough that you don't foul plugs at idle, but rich enough that you don't get a bog when you accelerate.

Re: JDX FIRST RIDE!!!!
Ok great! Id like to try this first before I go messing with the timing again. I was reading in the tech manual on how to adjust the Carb. I will have to try and lean it out and see what happens. Will that help with the warm restarts? It seems like if I pull the plugs out pull it over a few times then put them back in it fires right up! Wonder if its too rich?

Re: JDX FIRST RIDE!!!!
Proceed cautiously, watch your plug colors. Don't flog the hell out of it until you get it figured out.
Get the idle right before even thinking about messing with the high speed mixture. A bit of experience goes a long way here. Once you get it figured out, you'll soon be able to tell by the sound of it if its running rich, and you can make minor adjustments depending on outside temps. Now, running lean is a different deal, it'll run fantastic right up until you burn it down, so you have to keep checking those plugs until you get some seat time.

Re: JDX FIRST RIDE!!!!
Ok great! I have new plugs in it so I will turn it out a hair and watch it to see how the plugs look. I'll go easy on it. My dad had mentioned reeds too? Will that cause a bog?

Re: JDX FIRST RIDE!!!!
Bob, from what you are describing, you need to turn the idle mixture screw IN ( the screw on the side ).
Turning it IN makes it leaner, out makes it richer. This is backwards of the Mikuni air screw, but it is normal for most any other carb.
The reeds in these engines are stainless steel. I can't recall anyone having one fail, don't worry about them.

Re: JDX FIRST RIDE!!!!
Ok well I got some serious snow time in with the ol girl today and here's what I found. First I didnt touch the low speed needle as it looked to be screwed all the way in or pretty close to it. I pulled the plugs a few times and found my Fan side plug was half white and half black. PTO side plug was all black. I continued riding and did a few WOT runs. Pulled the plugs again and found that they were both brownish black. It runs Mint except at like 1/4 throttle speeds. It almost sounds like its breaking down at partial load. If you get to half and above the thing smooths right out. The idle still is kinda high until you wack the throttle then it comes back down. It restarts warm mint if you give it a little throttle. Im running 40:1 now and was thinking of goin 50:1 is that ok? I also noticed my headlight doesn't work but when I flip the switch the Tach drops like 2k RPM. Im kinda puzzled? Thanks! I love this thing!!!!!! Wish my Speedo worked so I could see how fast im goin!
