Aftermarket Cyclone Tach

Post by ski »

I just hooked up a modern Polaris (two pulse) tach on my 78 Cyclone. It has a large face and I don't know the exact year. But, it read high at idle around 5000 rpm. So obviously it is not right. I'm wondering if a 4 pulse,6 pulse, 9 pulse???? Whatever pulse?? will work. Wired it into lighting circuit. Yellow and tan(brown?) wires I believe.
Anyone try this on their Cyclone and get it to read properly?

you need a 6 pulse to read correctly on your CCW.

On a side note. I am wondering how do you tell what tach is what pulse?

I would have a good working OEM tach if you're interested.

I have seen some tachs that are marked on the back 2,4 or 6 pole or pulse.

If you were looking at a new aftermarket unit then it would be on the box for sure.

Otherwise you would need to look at a wiring diagram of the stator on the engine that the tach came from.

Thanks for the help guys. The correct tach for my 340 Kioritz engine is a 6 pulse. A found a late model large face Bombardier tach that works great now. And as a bonus it has large enough numbers that I can read and it's lighted too!. This is a racing application so it didn't have to fit in original hole. Also.. the pulse number was ink printed on the back of the tach.

The key to posting pics is the file size can't be over 200K. I use a free online picture resizer on all of my pics before posting, here is the link:

If you have trouble and want to give up go ahead and send them to terreb@umich.edu and I can post them for you....Terre

A 4 pole or pulse won't work either on the CCW/Kioritz CDI engines, I found that out on Tuckers 295/S..
I have NOS 10,000 RPM Sun Sno-Tachs 4 or 6 Pole/Pulse & NOS 8,000 & 10,000 RPM Arrow Tachs 4 & 6 Pole/Pulse.. All $100.00 ea. + shipping
