Trailfire LX Engine

Post by jdsledsrgr8 »

A friend of mine has a sweet 84 Trailfire LX but the motor is toast. He asked me to look around for a motor that is in good shape and ready to put in and ride. Motor is the Kawaski Fireburst TA440A which according to my files they used in Trailfires since their inception 1979-84. But someone might correct me if there is something different between the years.

Any help would be appreciated.

The LX's and the later models had oil injection and a different model numbers.
I would hold out for the correct engine to maintain the originality of the rare 84 T-fire.

I have an entire 440 engine without oil inj but with elec start. But I also agree with Todd. Just throwing it out there.

The oil injection could be taken off the old motor and put on a different one.

Just saying

The snowmobile is in mint condition with very low miles so it would be right to find a motor that is correct for its model year.

So an old motor from lets say an 80 Trailfire could not have the oil injection added to it. Correct?

Thanks for the help and interest.

Oil injection was available as a kit on 440 Trailfires up to serial 190,000 and all 340's. I don't know if they changed much after the advent of the 440 LX with oil injection, but the newer the better I would guess.

I know that at the very least, the LX had different cylinders and heads on it. That engine takes the copper head gaskets much like the sportfire where as the regular trailtire uses a fiber head gasket.

They were still a T-1 series.

Lloyd Just as Dustin stated above the cylinders and heads are similar to the sportfire cylinder and head configuration. They use a ring for a head gasket instead of the flat fiber gasket used on the non-oil injected models ! As far as different porting and such I never set the 2 side by side and measured anything or even looked at them ?? The LX engines were branded F202 on the tag and an upgraded plastic fan. :beers; I hope this helps

Thanks

I'm petty well versed on LF and Sportfire motors but green on the T1 series.
