Chain case oil

Anyone heard of using ATF in their chaincase? I had someone tell me they were running it in their 2000ish Catfish, because it is used in most 4wd transfer cases, and that is all that is in there: chain and sprockets.....hmmm.

Lighter oil such as ATF or synthetic would be better for easier lubrication in extreme cold BUT remember that after all these years the lighter oils may leak out thought the gasket, "O"-ring or even the bearing, I have even seen light weight oils leak out between the shaft & the bearing. If you use ATF or a synthetic just watch for an oil puddle under the chain case.

Ken is spot on.....no advantge with ATF, and you increase the liability failure potential If it was the hot set-up we would have put it in the chain cases from the factory 30 years ago. Hope it helps.....JRC ETD

Its ok to mix some atf in but wouldnt just use it. The toyota dealership I work for we sometimes add atf into the 5 speed truck trannys to thin things as some of the older trucks can be a bear cold shifting.

So what is recommended? An SAE oil of some kind? 30 or heavier? Thanks for all the input!
