Re: 1976 340 Cyclone Restoration
There was a little dust on the hood and I have in the past did a final wipe down of the primer with acetone. Learnt the hard way that not all primer like acetone. One quick wipe and there was a smear in the primer.

Very nice!
I'm happy to see someone can re-build their own Idlers ( note to Rainville ).
Question; on the drive sprockets, did you press brass collars onto them, what am I seeing?
You are getting there!

Re: 1976 340 Cyclone Restoration
Thanks for the compliment, although I would have liked to ride it this year, haha- maybe December?
As for the drivers, they came with the reinforcing bands around them (although I had to drill through that, I also had to bore the hex out to fit the driveshaft), I wanted the ones that looked closer to the NOS ones but they were unavailable to me. These ones were the right diameter and pitch.

Re: 1976 340 Cyclone Restoration
Haha, so you noticed our sweet work stand, not gonna lie Brock- it was a bit sketchy at times. Especially when I realized I had put the springs in upside down the first time around..... Lol luckily there were 2 of us to hold it.

Re: 1976 340 Cyclone Restoration
Is there a reason you have the bolts in the driveshaft bearing flanges oriented with the nuts inside the tunnel?
The reason I ask is that if you ever needed to pull the speedo drive off, it might be easier if all you had to do was turn the nuts off, pull it, and leave the bolts and bearings undisturbed. also, with the suspension installed, its going to be tough to get at those nuts.
If I'm all wet, tell me so.

You raise a solid point Brian. Honestly, I cannot remember the exact reason I orientated the bolts like that; maybe it's because I'm following the parts/service manuals religiously, maybe I couldn't get the bolts in there with the driver in the way. I know for sure on the chaincase side it was to keep from the possibility of losing nuts and washers in the case.
Maybe next time I take it apart I will heed your advice. Sigh.

Re: 1976 340 Cyclone Restoration
You are correct, the parts book does show the bolts pointed that direction, on both the Cyclone and the 00/JDXs.
However, the photos in the service manual show the 00/JDX speedo drive with the bolts on the inside pointing out, and that is how I remember them being on my sleds. On the 00/JDX chaincase, the nuts are welded in , so there is no confusion there. I don't have a Cyclone/ LF manual handy to look at, so I can't say for sure about that.
I do remember a thread a few years back, where a guy was struggling to install his driveshaft bearing bolts. Trying to get everything lined up, bolts inserted, them trying to start the nuts. I suggested he install the bolts from the inside, and the next day he reported that doing that had made it go a lot better.
No big deal, not trying to nit pick your work, you are doing great.
