Compression tests are best done when the engine is cold. You remove both plugs and hold the throttle open...Then pull the rope

Youre not going to get an accurate read on the plugs if your just letting it idle and rev it up a couple times. You actually need to ride it.

Gas does get into the airbox time to time...which will give you that black residue on the carbs. Its important to keep the air box clean.

Bob, I am using the 83 carb specs and the power jets are
PTO Carb. 110
Mag. Carb. 105

Everything else is fine.
If you are still having problems, check the choke cable adjustment and set it so you can flip the dash lever over-center to the extra-rich position.

Thanks Pat. I was suprised to see a 95 in there. That might explain the whiter plug in my mag cylinder. I have the chokes set like that already. I was hoping to find something wrong but i guess it all checks out. Altho pilots are a size smaller also.

I am running 35v pilots. I had 40's in there and felt it was to rich at idle.

Ok Pat great good to know there not too far off. Should I run Paul's suggestion of 30s? I do have HSR so I need the jetting for that. I really want to order jets tonight as we are expecting good snow this week. Thanks.

I don't think the HSR changed anything with the jets, it is just a more reliable and easier starting engine. I would not run any lower than 35 for the pilots if you are running in very cold weather. I did drop the needle in the carb slide down 1 notch to lean the idle and low speed out some.( move E-clip up ). That seemed to help.

Ok I did that as well. Mine is currently in clip 2. I guess I will just follow the fine tune specs unless there is a better combo. I don't really ride anywhere close to zero. Usually 20s and 30s maybe warmer. About 2K above sea level.

Ok quick update. Installed the right jets and took her out to the pond. Seemed to be runnin well on the low speed end. Warmed her up and cracked her open. It was breaking down like crazy and only hit 6K and not a rev more. I disconnected limiter and still no difference. I gave it choke and it made no difference as well. I don't understand why it would sit and idle fine forever but not wanna go WOT. Plugs look perfect too. I found if I run it half to 3/4 it runs dam good! Will sit at 6K and about 50mph. Got to Wot and it breaks down and backfires and stayed at 6K and drops speed to like 30mph. Any ideas? Carbs are cleaned and new jetted. Sled ran fine 2 weeks ago. Is it possible HSR is bad? Thanks
