Thank you all for the reply's. I hate seeing it just sitting there while I do other things. I have to keep telling myself that even if I got it running, it wouldn't do me any good right now!! Plus, the other projects need to be done, and some of them I'm making money on, so that will get me the parts I need.

I can see how it would be easy to do a restoration on these things. I'm going to be taking almost the whole thing apart anyway. So I might find myself cleaning and painting parts if I have them off anyway. I need a media blaster.

My sled has electric start as an option. Could a bad battery or ground from the battery cause any issues that I should look into? Is it fesiable that I can get the electric start working again for cheap? This would be nice because then my wife can ride when ever she wants. And if she rides and likes it, that helps get me the green light to buy more!!!

Sure, a bad battery could cause lots of issues, like a sled that doesn't start :)

Seriously, the electric start is usually pretty reliable, and if you put a fresh battery in, and clean all the electrical connections, it will probably work.

The battery has nothing to do with your ignition system though. Nada, Zip, Nothing.
The ignition is a magneto, it is always "ON", unless it is grounded out by the key switch or kill switch.

I have e-start on my '74 X8, and I really like it, and yes, it allows the wife and kids a chance to start it.

A new battery will run you less than $30.

Money well spent in my book.

on my truck, I can start it, and then take the battery out and use the battery to start a friends truck with no issues. But the ground wire was a little loose on my boat battery and the thing ran like crap, so who knows why these things happen.

I would guess it would have something to do with the out put of the alternator. Same way other small motors that don't have batteries get there power.

Loose battery connections on any vehicle can cause funky problems. FYI, if you ever unhook that electric start part of the wiring harness (there is a big connector) you need to install some wire jumpers for everything to work properly. The wiring diagram shows you where.

Your truck must be a Ford. They use the hot wire on the starter as their charging point for the alternator so the battery can be removed after the truck is started. Most other pieces of equipment use the battery as a charging point, so if the battery is removed, the alternator is not able to charge the system.

FORD?????? You hold your tongue!!!! It's a dodge. the next time I have money to throw away I'll buy a ford. I get them as work trucks, and unless I'm the most unlucky person with Fords, they have quality control issues. I love how they ride though. Seriously, I'm a dodge guy because of my family, and because people hate on them so much I scored my truck for a lot cheaper than a chevy or ford would be.

Most of my latest updates were in the CCW tech talk section. But I'll recap. I pulled it half apart and cleaned the points and rebuilt the Carb. After some issues (my ignorance) that was fixed with help from this site, a friend, and from the JD angels, my sled runs after 30 years!! I also found out that this sled was at the JD dealer in 82 and they couldn't figure out what was going on, so that makes me feel good that i listened to the right people!!!

I bought some flat black paint and some good flexable clear coat. I might have time tomorrow to work on the x6, but my daily driver is needing some attention, so depending on how long it takes me I might not get to painting. My lovely wife already masked off everything and I just need to do the easy work (for me at least)

Tonight I taped off the hood and graphics and got started. Sanded, painted, and clear coat. I hope it looks good in the morning. I know it wont look perfect, because I'm not fixing the gouges and that. I'll post pics.

I picked up another project as well. It's an old sled I think a Ski Doo. very dirty, needs a windshield and some interior help.

Some more pics I've been meaning to put up. Some of these are just of the sled after I took some time to clean it up.
