Mikuni conversion
Re: Mikuni conversion
Just wondering when I click on the "Newbreed" parts list I get a error 404 and no description. Any ideas?

Re: Mikuni conversion
OK here's my question. I am going to try to put a Mikuni VM30-83 carb. on my 73 JDX 4 295AX engine. I found a used carb on ebay for $10 with the pilot jet frozen and twisted off in the hole. I was able to get the old jet out but it was too damaged to tell what the size was. The Needle jet is 159 P-0, Main jet 140, Needle Valve 1.5, Slide 2.5, so I'm wondering what size pilot jet to use. The carb came off a 2001 Ski-Doo MXZ 380 and if any of the above jets, etc. can be used for the 295AX engine? Thanks for any input anyone might be able to give.
Re: Mikuni conversion
Sorry Matt I missed your post. I clicked on the list of parts required for this conversion several posts up and this is when I would get the 404 error.

Re: Mikuni conversion
Mailman,
I did a Mikuni swap on a 73 400 with a 340cc engine. The carb I used was a VM32. I started with a 30 pilot and had to drop to a 25 pilot jet to get it to idle.

Re: Mikuni conversion
I am also in the middle of trying to get this to work and would like to know if there is a mikuni kit that has many diff jet sizes, like a 25 and 30 and so on, instead of buying one at a time? i have seen the case but never one for sale with a verity of jets in it.
Re: Mikuni conversion
Another question I have on converting the JDX4 from a Walbro to a Mikuni is what do you use for a air box? Looking in Dennis Kirk I see there are some types of air filters that just fasten on the front of the carb. would these work in place of the original air box? Thanks
Re: Mikuni conversion
I'm pretty sure if you're going to run a mikuni on a midmount, there won't be room for any sort of airbox or filter.

Re: Mikuni conversion
The sled the Wife has been riding had a Mikuni on it when I first bought it close to ten years ago. I played with it for a couple of years before putting an original Walbro setup on it, mainly so I could run the correct air box and hose.
The Mikuni did have an "airhorn" type intake on it with the screens and foam. I'm thinking it was hose clamped on the throat of the carb. If you can find one that fits your carb, it "MIGHT" fit in your sled.

Re: Mikuni conversion
I had tried the Mikuni horn with the screen and filter media. It is a tight fit. Not too sure it doesn't block off air as it fits close against the inside of the console. It can still at times blow gas back out the horn and make a mess of the glove box or the top of the tunnel. It's also noisy IMO. This may not be the best fix but I used the original hose from the plastic airbox. I had to cut about 1-1/2" off the big end of the hose so the 90 bend was tight against the carb. With some effort the hose end can be stretched to fit over the Mikuni carb flange. Had I not done this the console would not clear for installation. Next, I angled the hose slightly upward pointing to the right of the machine to about the 2:00 postion to elliminate the possibilty of any blowback running out and making a mess. I then cut the other end of the hose to clear the inside of the console and re-installed the screen to keep the varmints out. You wind up with a short "L" shaped intake hose in the end. It fits, it muffles the carb sucking noise, and it has eliminated the black goo running out.

Re: Mikuni conversion
I put dual Mikunis, 34s, on my JDX8. I don't use any kind of air box or screen. I see lots of Cats, Brut and others without airboxes. I get the carb sucking noise Troy mentioned. The gas splash back and goo is blocked by the glove box cover, so I don't get it back on me. Put a ziplock bag with some tools in the old glove box place once. Thought it would be OK, but the bag got sucked part way into the carb! The guy riding it said it was really doggy. No wonder!

Re: Mikuni conversion
OK here's the question of the day. Am in the process of mounting a VM30 on my JDX4 and as it is now I have two fuel lines comeing out of my tank. Wondering if I block the return line and just use the fuel line to the single stage fuel pump and then on to the carb? Thanks
