Re: Barn find
You got it Chuck she has been right with me all the time, (sometimes reluctantly)just past 48 yr. apr 30 Looking for ideas on how to remove seized piston and wrist pins????
Re: Barn find
Hi Glen, nice to see you on JD Sleds. That is great that you got the 340 S back that you raced in 75, the memories of those days racing for John Deere are something to cherish.
I think Ernie Muniea ( spelling )from Quebec was also on the Canadian JD team, was there anyone else that i don't remember?
Keep sending pics of your progress on the 340 S.
Send me a message if you ever get close to Oak Bluff, would love to chat with you.

Re: Barn find
Glen, if you found a Gal that is willing to wrench on sleds that's great. Never met her but like her already, next thing you will tell us is that she likes to drink beer to................. About that stuck piston, got to let it soak in your favorite solution that you get from an auto parts dealer. If that don't work I recommend explosives. <just kidding>. Is the crank any good or is that shot?

Re: Barn find
Got the other Cyl off, but the wristpins are seizes. Any suggestions to get them out without wreaking the piston or connecting rod.

Re: Barn find
Pictures install one below the other. Actually last one posted is first one shown so if you want a sequential group of pictures start with last picture you want shown. Make sense??? If they can be shown side by side Matt will have to explain how to do it.

What are you using to try to remove the pins?
A couple pieces of tubing, some threaded rod, and as perhaps a bit of heat should get them out.

There is no way that I know of to do the photos side-by-side.

Re: Barn find
Remove the nut from the crank (impact works best), then use a harmonic dampener puller to pull off the flywheel. These can be stubborn, but a couple of hits with a dead blow hammer on the end of the puller usually pops them off.

I did it once when posting copies of the adds for the 1983 models last year. I think all I did was past the "IMG" strings next to each other. I will have to take a look.
Glen,
Welcome aboard, and great to see you found and are restoring your former racer. My first restoration was a 340/s. It was a challenge, but a rewarding one.

Re: Barn find
As soon as you posted the picture of the pistons you could se that the interior of the case and crank were pretty green and crusty. Nothing that cant be worked thru.

Re: Barn find
It is up to 5 inches now and still snowing so unfortunately we have to do cow things now .I thought we would get a little break between harvest and cattle so that I could do some fun things like finding out more information and passing it on, I did find out some information by accident this summer through guys that have a green blood flowing through their veins.I hope to get into the attic soon and I hope I will find more Memorabilia about the Canadian racing team.I also have some more pictures to put on and some information from some of my notes and some from memory (after all it is almost 40 years)so I will be more than happy for
anyone to correct me if I get something wrong and between us all we will try and come up with the correct information.

Re: Barn find
Hi Glen,
This is such a great story. Thanks for sharing it with us.
If you can't find a good 340/RS-2 crank, there was some discussion a while back about guys being able to use a 340/5 or 440/5 crankshaft as a replacement in the RS-2 engine. I think the only difference is the RS-2 has the heavier rod with the "K" stamped in it. I'm sure Jerome can fill you in on the details of possibilities being the Crank King!
Keep us posted.
