My feeling is that a properly functioning rev limiter probably would have prevented the problem......but, I can't recall very many of those rev limiters lasting two seasons, let alone 2 1/2 decades. I had to ditch the ones on both the liquifires I owned, as well as the one on my brothers, shortly after the warranty expired. I recently acquired a really mint Snowfire.......It was acting weird with the spark cutting out intermittently and unpredictably. Low and behold, Deere even put a rev limiter on a 28 hp sled. I've always wondered why John Deere installed rev limiters on some of their sleds, when no other sled manufacturer at the time, as far as I am aware, ever uilized such a devise. I suppose it must have had something to do with the bean counters figuring the added cost of installing it would be easily offset by reduced warranty claims? Anyone out there know why they used them?

Liquifire ..... I am guessing the Snowfire you are talking about is a 84? Also it probably has the toggle type kill switch and not the big red STOP button? 80 through 84 Liquifires had the limiter and all 84's had them.

I had thought the rev limiter to be more of a safety feature. It was supposed to prevent the sled from leaving you if it started with a stuck throttle.

Hey Brian,
It did both. It limited engine RPM's to something like 8,400 and used a brake light type switch in the throttle block to not let the motor rev over something like 2,500 RPM if there was no pressure on the throttle lever.
