1. Take the carb off the motor
2. Put a new piece of fuel line on the carb about 1 foot long
3. Hold carb upside down in your hand, no fuel can be in the carb or is not recommended
4. Place the new piece of fuel line in your mouth
5. Blow into the gas line like blowing up a balloon
6. Can you blow into it and feel air escaping inside the carb?
6A. If the answer is yes, clean carb
6B. If the answer is no, rebuild fuel pump or replace it

I had to edit my last post on line #3. The carb needs to be upside down, this simulates that the fuel bowl is full of gas and the floats will be all the way up and close off the needle and seat. If the needle or seat has dirt under it, fuel will leak by and cause a flooded condition whether it be soaked plugs or a filled crank case. Do not attempt to start a motor that you think is full fuel. It may hydro-lock on you and then bend a piston rod.

Danzig wouldn't you be able to blow the needle open? fuel pump is easy to rebuild esp if its a single. You dont even need to get new parts. Just take it apart carb clean it and put it back together. BOB

In theory, the harder you blow the tighter the needle will seat. If there is dirt on the tip of the needle, the needle will not close off the air you are blowing into it or in the real world, it would be fuel not air. Thus a flooded problem.

Wait if the carb is upside down the needle is on the seat. If you blow wouldnt it push the needle up off the seat not down. BOB

Bob-

I sat at my kitchen table 2 weeks ago and did this to my carbs to verify I did not have a bad seat or needle. Wife thought I was nuts having a hose in my mouth and the carb in my hand on the other end of the hose. It works.

Take a carb off and do it, thats all I can tell you, while blowing in to the carb, manually open and close the needle, you will see.

Take the carb off the sled and get the gas out of it.

Flip the carb upside down after you put a hose on it where the gas line from the fuel pump goes. If you cant blow air in it, your test is good for the sealing of the needle and seat. If you can blow air in it, take apart your carb and clean it. Try this again after the assembly. You are testing the needle and seat for a fuel leakage this is all you are doing at this time.

The test that Paul explained tests the needle/seats abilty to seal. Simply put, you drain the carb, connect a clean piece of fuel line, invert the carb upside down, and blow air into the hose.
There is a small squeeze-bulb tester that you can buy with a gauge mounted to it. As you pump it up, the pressure should break away or escape after about 7 lbs.
