regarding crankcase flooding, my 76 cyclone flooded severely a few nites ago just sitting in the garage while I was working on adjusting the track alignment. It hasn't since done this, however, sometimes it is hard to start warm after sitting for 20 minutes or longer and it is definitely flooded as I have to hold the throttle wide open to start.
i pulled the impulse line from engine and found no fuel leaking. the machine still operates well under normal riding condtions. I don't think i'm doing bad on fuel consumption as i once had a bad seat on one carb on a 74 El tigre and my fuel consumption was atrocious! Also, if it is the needle and seat in the carb, fuel can't run thru the carb unless the fuel pump is pumping fuel to it correct?
thx guys! Love the site!

Re: 76 cyclone still wont start
fuel will flow right through a fuel pump if the fuel level in the tank is higher than the carb and the needle and seat aren't seating 100% if there is no gas in the pulse line than sounds like your needle and seat are leaking by some amount, maybe partly , mostly sort of, or pretty much, but not completely wade

When you were working on the track most likely you had the rear of the sled lifted up.
This would raise the tank level above the carbs like Wade mentioned.
Sometimes the same think happens when you prop up the sled after a ride to prevent freezing and than the gas slowly leaks past the carb into the engine.
In-line shut off can prevent this or pinch off the gas line when you are servicing the sled.
And keep in mind some needle/seats from aftermarket manufactuors are not 100% tight.

Re: 76 cyclone still wont start
thanx guys, makes sense when I had the track lifted JDT. I do have a factory fuel shut off valve on it but failed to utilize it when I was doing my work. However, I sure will use it in the future (I suppose they came factory for a reason?)! I have a second/spare carb that I'm going to swap out to see if I still get a flooding issue occasionally when the sled sits for a while after warmed up/ridden.
I do recall, perhaps, seeing somewhere about how these fuel shutoff valves were to be used when transporting to prevent possible crankcase flooding -- not sure if it was in JD materials somewhere or what thoh.
thx again - go Deere!

Re: 76 cyclone still wont start
swapped out carbs yesterday and had the original tested...it failed pressure test so indeed a needle and seat issue! 'Starts and runs better now too. i'll order a new needle n seat, however, I don't see or find any numbers to reference to obtain the correct one. My local Polaris dealer lists 2 best that we can find. they are as follows: 07-152-04 VM 34/39, 3.3, 32-34 mm and 07-152-03, VM 34/39, 2.5, 30 - 44 mm. I'm thinking its probably the first one?
Any ideas?
thx again!!

thx skoal!
Not to argue with u or say that ur wrong, the cyclone 340 carburetor is a VM34-83. the 1.5 needle and seat on new breed parts shows the 1.5 as 28mm to 30 mm carbs? Also, the 1.2 looks more like whats in my carb (it has the wire retainer) and lists as 30mm to 40mm? I'm confused. No needle and seat specs in JD manuals for my sled either.
i'll check with my dealer tomorrow as far as further availablitly
regards
Lloyd

Lloyd, he is right about 1.5, but there are different styles of 1.5 and you are looking at the small carb body style. I see why you thought that though, I don't have the 34mm carb style on the site right now because they are out of stock.
