We always had to register the serial number of the sled we entered in the I-500. Are you going to register both, or don't you have to do that for this race?

Wade,

If you are serious about the 340/S I'll give you a couple of suggestions regarding issues I've had with my 340/S. The positive stops for the front swing arm act as a guillotine every time the suspension takes a hard impact and bottoms out. Over time the frame rails will crack and then break. You need to reinforce the slide rails under those stops. I thought mine was the exception to the rule until I saw Jon's I-500 340/S at the HOF. His suspension was so reinforced the slide rails looked like railroad irons! Replace the original CDI and stator with a Hewtech rewound stator and Fireplug CDI. The old "A" style Prestolite units and stators don't like the heat anymore after years of running. These things put me out of the VC ride the first two years.

da , thanks for bringing reality to light , good point on having 2 half done sleds, troy thanks for the ideas and thanks in advance for many more . the rules lend themselves to updating for reliability such as using modern clutching and driveline and electronics the next few weeks will probably tell the story wade

Lindork,

When you pass me, you can wave...

Wade,

I am working on updating my 80 LF, buiding a practice sled, and rebuilding my toasted motor. I will be running basically the same machine as last year, but with a few updates including studs. Might try plactic ski's if there is time to work it out.

With Nicasil bores, Jerome crank, and Wisco Pro-Lite pistons, that motor should have been a runner. I could have left the coolant bolt loose on any motor, so I can't blame the Kawi on my mistake. Most important thing I can do this year is get some seat time before the race...

Only once in the Vintage Challenge did that happen. Amost made up for two years of you eating snow :lol22: And to quote Loren Anderson: "It's not a race!"

Bring the X-8 out for the I-500. You would not only be the oldest sled there, but the only mid-mount too. While I would still make fun of you, I might actually respect the effort...or not!

Ahhhh..... RainDeere, you might recall, a number of us waved as we passed just LAST YEAR, TWICE!

And the year before that we stayed behind you just to be nice.

I'll let you guys do the ditch banging, I'll stick to the ride that "isn't" a race.

I am sure that there were some X-8's in the race back in the along with a lot of boggy sleds.
Keep in mind this is not the 500 mile race your father ran but a shorter, but not leasurely, 175 miles.
Would love to see an older machine start and finish.

Todd,

If you watch the old I-500 vid's, you can see a few X-4's in there. I belive a 73 JDX-4 complete with a steel tunnel and boggies finished in 74. Jesse knows more of that story. And in 75 you can see at least on JDX-4 (Special I think) running with the 340/s'. If I was going to run any mid-mount, it would probably be a 75 JDX-8, but it would be a much harder ride than a Liquifire.

Jr Pederson finished in '72 on a 500. Of course, they weren't racing against sleds like Liquifires and el Tigres.

You guys really shouldn't even consider riding a mid-mount, it would be way too embarrassing for the hot shots to endure if you were to finish and they didn't.

It would be like being the Vikings, nobody expects you to win, so there would be no pressure on you. Just finishing would be huge. Waving at Rainville would be icing on the cake!

Honestly though, your body would take a severe beating, and you wouldn't be competitive at all in the rough or the twistys.
