It sounds to me like a CDI. I had an Invader doing the same thing last year and a CDI fixed it right up.

It is a LOT less work to change the CDI than it is to switch to a HSR ignition..

I would sure try a different CDI befor I did all the work switching ignitions

Yeah your right Lloyd! I was thinking about it more lastnight. It would mean pulling the motor. I can change CDI in the frame. Were can I get one is the question now? Thanks.

there are used ones on e-bay

most parts suppliers can get you a new one.

Same CDI as a Sportfire, Kawasaki Invder, Intruder or Drifter 440.

If you could find one to Try you would know for sure if that was the problem.

I have a Invader that was doing exactly what yours seems to be. I had a used CDI to try and it work fine.

You might be able to get a used one from a wrecker if there are any close to you.

Put a add in the classified on here and you might get a good deal on one.

Bob I am not positive but I think in order to make the switch to HSR you also need to change the flywheel also.

Anyone confirm this???

I might be wrong but does the 80-81 take the inertia disc & the 82-84 does use one??
Parts book shows using one -19000 & a flywheel break between -19000 & 19001+

I believe your right Kenny. I believe I said it backwards. Inertia disk is on the regular ignition set ups. HSR doesn't have one.

Now this thing wont even Run!! I wish these had a case drain on them. I wonder if i put a vacuum through the impulse line to try and suck any liquid out? Would that work?

Have you adjusted your choke plungers? What is the compression? How did the pressure test come out? Did you ever get the CDI changed out?

CDI should be here tomorrow. Chokes should be set right. When it did run it would start to die out when you lifted the lever ever so slightly. I dont have a compression tester. And the. Motor did pressure tes good.

With my minimal experience with the Kawi engines, I have learned that you first set the choke plungers by the service manual then you check the "free-play" with the dash closed. The cables change with the dash open and closed. If you have the plungers set correctly, you should be able to flip the choke level back past the " normal" open position which allows more air to enter. This is also in the service manual.

Yes your right! They even say your supposed to set the chokes with the dash down. Mine are set so you can flip it open 100% I set them per the manual specs too.

Mr. Deere, I went through similar woes this past year getting a basketcase '80 in running order. I know you've said that you had the carburetors professionally rebuilt. Just make sure that whoever rebuilt them used the proper jets and needles. I had the issue with the choke not being adjusted correctly, and an improper main jet that was pouring too much fuel into the mag side side cylinder and flooding the crankcase.

I would suggest going through all of your wiring harnesses and making sure all the connections are clean and properly connected to one another. Also, take one of the plugs out, keep the wire on it and turn the engine over a few times. Make sure the engine has spark.

It is going to be a matter of elimination. As most have already mentioned, it is probably a bad CDI. Once you have a CDI you are positive is in working order it may sure all of your problems, or in the least, eliminate one things that it could possibly be.

Bob you can suck out a severlly flooded engine but use a small hose and start a syphon action with it.

Do not put a vaccum pump on the case as you can implode your seals.
