Re: Barn find
Thanks for the info, I have located a crank.
I want to thank Brian Henrion from Redvers, Sask who gave me a complete motor to use any parts I need to get my engine running.
On our way to Detroit ( hauling our 1931 Dodge Bros car) to celebrate 100 years when the Dodge Bros broke away from Ford & started building their own cars, we stopped at Brian's place & dismantled the engine. We then dropped the crank off at Jerome's & a week later on the way back picked up the crank with all new bearings & seals. So I have a start on the long trail to restoration.
In answer to Chuck Moser's comments earlier this year about whether my wife drinks beer -- she doesn't drink beer ( as far as that goes I don't either.), but she does all kinds of other things like driving Combines, grain trucks, tractors, but mostly pulling me out of the mud & when I got stuck in the snow 2 days ago!

Re: Barn find
Glen, go to the Snowmobile Hall of Fame website, www.snowmobilehalloffame.com Scroll across the top and you'll see a tab that says "Legends Race", click on that tab. I do not know why it's labeled like that as this is a reunion on Friday night and an optional trail ride on Saturday. It should give you all you need to know but if you need more info the brochure will be out shortly and I can send you one if you give me an address. Thanks for your interest.

Re: Barn find
Plans are in the works to be there. The adrenaline is starting to flow to get this sled on the snow.does anyone know where I can get gasket set for 340 s?
I'm also wondering about the track is it exactly the same as a cyclone track because I need one of them too.40 years is a long time to remember but I thought I remembered the 340 is having a rubber track or does it have the two thirds cleated track.

Re: Barn find
The track is a 2/3's cleat just like the Cyclones and Gen 1 Liquifires.
1976 Liquidator - 970 mile raced sled
1975 340/S - I-500 raced sled
1978 440 Liquifire

Re: Barn find
Just to clarify the track question, almost all the 74-78 slide rail sleds tracks interchange. The exceptions are the 76 Liquidator, 78 Cross Country Liquifire and the 78 Spitfire of course. The 74-75 JDX's, 74 295/s with slides, 75 340/s and 76-78 Cyclone and Liquifire's all came with a 121" long X 15" track with a 2.52" drive sprocket pitch.
All these sleds from 74-76 came with the bonded on cleated Goodyear track. For 1977 Deere went to a riveted 2/3rds cleated track for the Liquifire. I think the Cyclone didn't get it until 1978. Any of these old Deere's that still have the original Goodyear 15" cleated track should have them replaced. The riveted 2/3rd track back fits all the older sleds, including the slide rail 295/s and of course the 340/s.
Deere did offer a slide rail stiffener kit for back fitting the 2/3's cleated track, but I do not know how affective they were at strengthening the front of the rail.
I hope this helps,
-Joe Rainville

Re: Barn find
Glen I can help with head gaskets and base gaskets. I also might have a track but shipment to you would probably be cost prohibitive. If I still have it it's just an AM54102, nothing special.

Re: Barn find
Thanks Joe and Don for the information and the offers I am meeting shaun booth tomorrow in Saskatoon snowmobile show and I'm getting parts from Him and Brian Henrion and Ryan from Ontario said he has a gasket set so I will keep you informed as I am gathering up the parts.I finally got the snowmobilie to the shop today-with all the pieces,The plan was to get the belly pan off and check the frame out but I only got as far as getting the bumper off and taking some pictures.I knew we had done some reinforcing before the I 500 but I was surprised to see how much we had done.I will try and get some pictures on the forms but we're having trouble transferring over to the computer so I think we will try and send straight from the iPad.

The pictures are too big to transfer we're now trying to figure out how to make them smaller

Re: Barn find
The "Peanut Butter" patch probably came during it's absence .
The extra hole beside the motor mount hole looks like a cleat puncture.

Re: Barn find
Found more goodies 1 Now I have more questions. Made a sleigh out of a crate frame that JD sleds came in. Does this look like the original ski's & springs for a 340S ? The saddles are ruined from many miles on sleigh.

Re: Barn find
Thought I had a spare suspension for the 340S, the rusty one on the left is the one that came back with the sled. The one on the right I found in a shed, but the front arm is shorter & it has a single shock so am not sure it will fit the 340S. The one on the right can have 4 wheels attached on each side of the slides, which I thought we ran in the cross-country races because of marginal snow in places.

Re: Barn find
The track drive with the double center wheels came with the sled, will it work on the 2 /3rd's split track? In the parts book it shows only one center wheel .
