serial number questions
I think what Jon is taking about is the WI Lic. plate. If I remember when I saw that sled it has the holes in the same spot as my factory racer. Craig- Look under the '07 HOF pictures to see what I'm talking about. It is the 295/s that is in lot of the pics.

Yes... it would be the WI hard plate right below the bumper, if it's not drilled don't worry, if very confident that this is my Dads 295/s! My congratulations, it is a great find and a sled I have wondered about for many years! Best Regards JRC

This serial number does not show up in the system as being sold through a dealership
and does not have a history. This is usually the case for sleds that were raced or
acquired directly from inside Deere................

Yep, here are the holes on the pan just like you guys said there should be for a hard plate. I can't believe my good fortune to have this lucky find. It's a sled from one of the guys who started it all!
My curiousity is still up about one thing though. For some reason there are holes drilled on each side of the hood. Any idea why? Reflectors or something? Maybe you recall something JRC?
Thanks for all your help everyone in tracking this sled's history! Here are some pics of what I'm referring to below.

Check the center line distance ..... My guess is the plate started off up there
and moved down.
My 295 has the same

I see what you mean Joe. That's probably it. But does your's have holes on both sides of the hood too? Is your 295/s also raced or aquired from inside Deere like you were saying above for my serial?
Thanks,
Craig

A little off topic, but what's the deal with the WI license plates? Why did only some have them? Great Sleds Craig, I wish my 295/S looked so nice!

Hate to crash any parties here but the holes in the bely pan are on the sled i sold Joe Rainville a year or 2 ago and are also on the 2 sleds that are in my possesion currently.None of these have history. Dont believe they mean anything. Holes in the hood could be anyones guess. I seen that sled and it is absolutly beautiful Just my humble opinion.

Hi Chuck,
I got an email from 'deere momorabilia' and he said that the 295/s were pre-stamped with holes on the right side for the battery box for electric start since the pan is the same as the 100/x series (eventhough electric start probably wasn't used on the 295/s). I hope I quoted you right 'deere memorabilia'. You sound bang on with that.
That would explain why all the pans have these holes and so Chuck you would be right then that these holes don't mean anything (UNLESS the holes are also on the right side since they would have then been drilled specifically for a hard plate there?). Again, thanks for the info Jesse.
SO, I have to check AGAIN on the left side of the pan now. And I still am not 100% sure about the holes in the hood but Joe's theory seems like a good one.
It is hard to tell in your pic Chuck due to that sticker on the hood, but does your 295/s happen to have these holes drilled into either or both sides of the hood itself? Please feel free to correct me anyone if you can clear any of this up.
BTW Chuck, that 295/s in that pic isn't too shabby either!
Thanks!
Craig

My 295/s is a factory race sled and it has 2 holes on both sides where the factory reg. plates were pop rivited. We used these samp reg. plates on all our test sleds and early race 295/s. We just removed the plates when ever we scraped a test sles and used them on future test sleds. They are not wisconsin lic. plates. We were exempt from putting numbers and registring our factory sleds every year. The holes in the plates were 6in apart and 2 per plate. Exescutive privleged sleds would also have this plate. OK ED
