Not to stir the pot but what the heck......

The old man my Father, owned and street raced a Chevelle back in the day. That being 1968-1970. The Chevelle he had was a 1966 396 SS. The 396 was pulled and behold a 427 was put in its place, I was told all this stuff this past weekend when I made my visit up in Shawano, Wi. this past weekend. Any how, the 427 was a valve spring eater, dont give me no BS that he didnt know what the F he was doing, he has been a mechanic for GM since 1974 and this was a common problem on these 427's, he was one of the first techs in the state of Illinois to be trained on the fuel injection systems when they first come out in Chicago. Any how, he raced this Chevelle almost every weekend, won some and won alot more, this is street racing now, no christmas tree. His only loss came from a dodge super B. This race happened on a road down in southern Illinois, the old man doesnt know what this kid had in this car but he said, dad said he got the hole shot on him, then kept pulling from him till he was about 2 car lenghts ahead, then he heard a train from behind, that being this Super B. He said this car kicked his a$$ so bad, he feel nitrous had to be involved, he didnt know, nitrous back then was just getting started. The old Chevelle was then sold because, I came along in 1970. Dad was in Viet NAM war, tent city Guam. All in all, I will say it, I love Chevrolets, I like Mopar and I would pull my sleds to the HOF by hand rather than drive, ride in or own a Ford. Ford spelled backward.........Driver Returns On Foot..

Have good day everyone.

depending on year either a 383 magnum or 440 magnum or 440 6pack.. 426 hemi was option but they were rare. my guess is a 440 6 pack no nitrous.

The king of the Demo Derby cars from my early days - Chrysler Imperial

I have a buddy that has rebuilt motors for years - he said to stay away from Quaker State and any other oil that has a Parafin Base. He rattled off a list of them but I only remember Quaker State and Motorcraft brands.

I ran the derby scene pretty hard in the mid eighties and early nineties. I always ran the 74 to 76 Impala wagons. They had a full frame with the shock bumpers on front and rear. I ran a 350 2 barrel with points distributor and a 400 tranny. It never let me down! I battled some very impressive Chrysler products. The late 60's 440 wagons are very formidable opponents. The Imperials are very tough. I have seen well built (prepared) Chevy wagons beat Imperials but only a few times. It takes smart driving, well placed hits, and luck. The engines in the Imperials were weak for derbying. Most of the guys who ran them replaced the mopar power plants with a small block chevy.

This wagon is the last one I have left. It's a 9 passenger with power windows, seats, locks, climatrol air and heat, cruise, and factory FM 8 track stereo. I has a 400 small block 4 barrel with 350 auto. Odometer shows 82,000. Its a real cruiser. It has sat in the barn for awhile as you can see. I start it up and let it run every few weeks. I have driven it to the local derbies just to aggreivate everybody.

T-Roy (my new name for you) you never cease to amaze me. But, your Hoosier roots are showing my friend. Demo's are popular right now. Saw where they had one this year at the State Fair. Don

That's funny Don, my brother calls me the same thing.

I ran the state fair twice in the late eighties. It was very rough. If you didn't have a wagon you didn't belong. The heats were huge. To make the feature you had to bump and tap other cars. Once you made the feature you could do some hitting but you still had to try to save the best for the end. From what I've seen of late the mini cars are more popular than the full size cars.

Bob,

Most of the cars I found were far from what I would consider to be classic restorable condition. Some were purchased from junk yards and were nearly stripped all ready which was great for what I was doing. Others were bought from people who had bought them just for the engine as some came equipped with 454 big blocks. They didn't want was left and sold them for cheap. I did buy a few that I drove home at the time of purchase. Yes, I should have my butt kicked for ruining one I bought. While driving home I set the cruise and turned on the air. It all worked and the air just about ran me out of the car. The one I posted pics of I refused to demo. It is just too nice a car.

Bob if that makes you sick, listen to this. In 1975 or 76, my Chevrolet ASM had a fender bender with his company car, a Caprice Wagon. Truly only dented the left front fender. At the time GM did not carry insurance on their vehicles (property damage I mean, obviously they carried liability). It was GM's policy that their cars not be repaired so I was asked to serve as a witness when we took the car to a local salvage yard where it was crushed! Don
