I just aquired a 79 trailfire 440. After cleaning the carb and going over things , im having the same issues. once its hot, it wont idle, and wont start unless held wide open. I get a backfire through the exhaust here and there, and it smells real rich on the bottom. I have dropped the needle, and adjusted the air screw, it makes it alittle better but still not the fix. I have noticed i have a exhaust leak from the y pipe to the expansion chamber, going to address that next. How do i go about checking the timing? Sorry i dont have a manual yet.

So after you changed the one crank seal you didnt set the timing right causing all your problems?
