The " Tach am52346 spit, trail, snow sprint " Won't work on a Kioritz engine.. Unless your needing it for a Kawi engine??

Kenny, it does. I recently figured this out. I always wondered why there were so many of those early tachs floating around...turns out they were used on the Kawi powered sleds as well.

They don't work on the Kioritz engines with CDI, just the points sleds.

I also found out that the Sun Sno-Tach's also don't work on the Kioritz CDI Ign. for some reason?? They probably wouldn't work on the Kohlers either??

I gather that the Kohlers and the Kawis used a similar design ign coil. The Prestolites were the odd balls, the multi pole stator gives then more AC cycles, which is what the tach counts.

I believe the points tach works on the Kohlers as well.

Brian, The Sno-twisters used the prsetolite just like the Deere's ( 340/S&295/S same connectors, Not sure when or if they changed to anything else at a later date?? ) that is why I can't get the Sun Tachs to work..

OK Kenny, You're correct about the Kohlers used in the Mercs with the prestolites. Same deal as with the Deeres.

I should have been more specific. It appears that the 8k tachs used on the points ign Deeres, also work on the Kohlers used in the Spitfires, and the Kawi powered sleds.

All these engines use a "shoe" type lighting coil, that is the thing common to all.

That is what is refered to as a 2-pole tach.
With an 8 or 6 pole lighting coil a specific tach is required.

SOOOO JDT are you saying that IF I put a 3cyl, 6 pole Sun Sno-Tach like the Kawi or Fuji 3 cylinders used then it might work on the Deere's?
2 Pole tach is usually used on a 1 banger, 4 on a twin & 6 on a 3 cyl. on most sleds with CDI except the ones with Prestolite Ign. I guess?? at least from my experience...

I understand why a shoe type ignition coil would have to change depending on the number of cylinders, but why should the lighting coil change?

The number of poles determines the number of pulses per revolution.
Two pole is the most common on vintage sleds and produce two pulses per rev.

If you were to put a 4 pole tach on an engine with a two pole coil it will only read half the actual RPM.

As wattage requirements increased over the years due to halogen lights, hand warmers, Misc heaters, ect there was a need for higher output coils.
Engineeres came up with 4-6-8 pole designs. Wattages rose to over 200 on some late model sleds.

Some old machines only had 40 watt coils.

The type of ignition has nothing to due with the number of poles on teh lighting system.
In the case of the 800 CDI update a new tach was required because the stator plate had more lighting coils not beasude it was a CDI sytem.
