73 Panther 340
73 Panther 340
Sorry, not really a JD topic, but I cannot find a good Arctic Cat site. The ones I do find just have pictures and maybe the year it was made or very little if any information. I have a 73 Panther 340 that was picked up at an auction and would like to do a quicky tune up and such. Dose anyone know of any good Cat sites? The sled is all complete, even has the temp gauges for the cylinders. There are 5 Deeres in my family and I was given a Cat, heck my newest sled is a Polaris, never owned a Cat before and might as well use it.

ArcticChat.com, vintage section (defined as '92 and older). Good group there.
Re: 73 Panther 340
I have an older repair manual that covers or has some info on sleds made from the 60's-mid 80's. This manual shows a P-340 in 73 and a Panther 340 in 74. This maybe a 74. It is very generic on repairs procedures and not specific to one model, although alot of the machines back then were the same, only engine size and some options made them different. It has a Kawasaki 340 in it, and the carb I think is Walbro WF. I was wondering, would the carb from a Trailfire work? I have a Trailfire 440 that won't be ready for a couple years, don't know the difference in the motors for early seventies and a 79 Kawi motor. This is the best manufacturer site, all other sites do not have the information, breakdowns, specs that this site has. Most are fan sites that show a few pics and what models were available for some years.

Re: 73 Panther 340
Cosmo440, the traifire carb would be a good choice & the jetting should be close to where you want to start, But remember the Panther is way heavier than the trailfire so don't lean into it until your sure the jetting is rich enough.. I would however purchase a new carb to intake adapter just to make sure the old one is not hard or has any cracks.
You might have to purchase a new throttle cable as I think the Trailfire one might be too short, or have problems mounting it or fitting the throttle leaver, a 75 lynx used a Mikuni carb so if you can find a cable for it then you should have a length that will work..
Hope this helps

Re: 73 Panther 340
The original Carb on a 73 Panther was a WD-1.
Cat offered a retrofit update kit on 73's that moved to a WF-1 Floater carb.
The 74's all had the Floaters.
Neither one used a carb adapter like the Mikuni's found on the Trailfire.
The WD used a spacer (insulator) and two gaskets.
The WF used an O-ring.
The cables are different and the Whisper-cool air boxes are different also.
Parts and kits are available for both Walbro carbs.
The Floaters work very well when cleaned
