How to change crank seals

Post by kiedro44 »

I'm going to be replacing the outer crank seals on my 73X8. On a KEC 440/21 motor does this mean a from the top tear down, or is it less invasive than that? I've had aprt CCW motors before only a time or two and its been years. I don't think the service manual I've found specifies that repair. Any pointers on crank seal change outs?
Thanks.

You do not have to take the top of the engine apart or split the crankcase but you will need to remove the clutch and flywheel. It is much easier to do the job on a work bench but since you have a mid-mount sled you could possibly do it on the sled.
Here is link to an online service manual. It explains how to change the PTO (clutch side) seal. Use the same instructions to change the seal under the flywheel.

The proper seals are 501302, 501301 from Manufacture supply.
