JD 600 Good doaner engine??

Post by daveroy »

What would be a good easy bolt in replacement for the engine in a JD600 ('73).
I'm going to start a full tear down, but wanted to know what other options I might have...

A Reed Valve 440 will liven up your 600 but you will lose the toolbox as the carb sits lower.

JDT,

Not trying to sound ignorant (but I obviously am) which engines would be reed valve?
I know what reed valve 2 stokes are but which models and years had 440 reed valves that would be a pretty easy swap?

The RV engines were used in the JDX's and the Cyclone. Pretty much drop in exchange but exhaust may require some modification.

My X8 is a 440/22 reed, and it has a tool box.

i asked the same question for my jdx4 special it had a ccw kec-340/5 and i asked if it was a rv or a piston port and a guy told me that the 340/5 was a piston port engine and a 340/22 was a rv engine i don't now if this helps but check out www.vintagesnow.com click on johndeere in the list then click on service manuals you sould find somthing.and just somthing to say my brother got his 1974 scorpion super stinger 340 stuck in a corn field and stuld the engine and i had to tow him back to the house with my john deere JDX4 SPECIAL 340 IN FLUFFY SNOW. NOTHING RUNS LIKE A DEERE. :sled: :letitsnow: :usa:

I had a hundred series sled once that had a 440/22 engine in it and the tool box was missing.

I had a spare so I went to install it and it wound not clear the carb.
I had to cut a large notch in the front lip to make it fit.

Todd,

The reed valve engines will fit in the mid mount sleds with the glove box intact, IF the walbro carb is used. If you use the mikuni as i did on my 800, it is really tight and there isn't much room for it to breathe. I'm not sure if it will run or not. The glove box may have to be removed.

The 440/22 is also a cdi ignition and has the tuned exhaust. It would be sweet replacement for a 600. May need a slight hood mod for the exhaust to fit. Might be hard to find. That's the engine that was in the 75 800.

ive got a 400/22a with dual carbs on my jdx4 special and the carbs fit with the glove box i guess i havent really given any consideration to runability as the carbs are shrouded a bit ill check that out tomarrow , oh ya the 800 pipe fit under the 74 hood like a champ very simple to measure for the muffler outlet from the doner sled ,fasten the pipe all together with the springs and drill 2 holes for the muffler mounting ,pretty fun project wade
