I am currently working on putting a 200 horse triple in a 1980 liquifire with a independant front end. It will all fit under the hood except for a little of the middle pipe, I will have to cut a small slit in the hood for it. I am going to run a cat secondary with a 42 degree helix and a purple spring the tighter I wound the spring the faster it went. The clutch engages at 5000 rpm. I am going to a cat jackshaft also to eese the fit of the secondary. The motor is fully ported including the lower end! I run 44 mm carbs and am running exturnal cooling. I ran 78 mph in 300 feet 4 years ago with this motor in a different chassi.
My question is will the jd chain case take the abuse? I gernaded a polaris chain case the last time I ran this thing. I also have heard of people taking out the steel stiffeners in the deere is this safe? I have also come across a turbo for this motor and am interested in it. AM I INSANE OR WILL THIS WORK ?Have had track tension problems in the past when I was running a parrarail sus. I plan to keep this thing deere as much as possible. NEED HELP IN THE TURBO WAY. Has anyone messed with this. I saw a R1 yamaha run 108 mph in 500 feet. Thus it makes me interested. Also looking for a complete set of 1980 deere decals cheap, plus a few JDSLEDS'.com decals would be great. Again I am doing this as money allows. I am close but it happens slowly for me. I have several picks I can send to Matt if people are intersted in this project.
Guess I got bored with restoring and am now into going fast. Chuck you still gat that one of a kind liquid motor you would like to donate??

Ron: Are you sure the Polaris chain case grenaded first? or could the chain have broke first then blew up the case? Were you using the newer (other brands) wider chain & gears, I would use the 80+ chain case & tightner system. What steel stiffeners are you talking about???
If your interested I have a bunch of Brand New 3.29 pitch, 7" tall, 14 teeth, front drive sprockets, only thing is they take a 1.375 hex drive shaft.

Hi Ron,

Gee, only 200 hp?! NICE! Anyway, since the little Deere was designed to handle around 60-70 hp for the life of the sled, you might be stressing the case "just a bit!"

Since you are not jumping it (are you?), or landing full throttle from a jump, the main stress should be from tension of the chain trying to pull the jackshaft down, and the drive shaft up. So, with case being in compression, it "might" hold up. The chain is probably your weakest link. I "think" that Deere's spline is simular to what Cat and Polaris use currently. Cat makes 13 and 15 plate wide gears and chains that would be much stronger than the Deere 11 plate set up. You might have to have a chain shortened, but that "should" be doable with a pin driver.

Good Luck Big Ron,

Kenny yes I should clarify. I blew the chain out of the case and in turn it wasn't happy with just that, it took the chain case brake and also the gears for good measure.
Joe are telling me that my collection of chains and gears may not work for this application anymore LOL! I will have to look into the cat stuff some more.
By the way maybe you should try keeping your sled on the ground, I hear it is much safer that way! I have been reading past posts!
Car racing season is right around the corner for me. We start next month, then I only have a few Sundays to work on it.

Sounds like we may have the WISSOTA 100 at my home track! This would be great because I hate to drive that far for a 3 day event.... www.deerecreekspeedway.com

I dont have a whole lot to add about this, except that the chain n sprokets are identical to mid 70s polaris stuff,
Also it is funny i was just looking at my 340/s chassis the other day thinking that it would make a nice drag sled donor, i have a 600 polaris tripple from a84 indy, it will hav no hood or belly pan, so pipe fitment isnt a problem, and i would retrofit all polaris drivline into this sled , i took a polaris chassis and the 340/s chassis both bare and the 340/s was lighter by about 13 lbs according to the elevators truck scale  , oh what fun we can have!!

as far as the chain case deere uses smaller shafts and bearing than polaris or cat. to fit a polaris case into a deere chassis it can be done but you will have to be able to weld an ear on the bottem of the bulkhead. and you have to move the bolt pattern from the inside to the outside of the case. if this is something that you are interested in i have photos of this change. it was done in the sunfire progect. there might be photos in an earlier post. of all the chain, chaincases i would say that the latest polaris cases are the strongest. look for one out of a storm or any of the higher horsepower polaris. these should have the 15 link chains that was mentioned earlier.
