A sled to go with the engine
The intention was to have the '72 400 ready for the Baraboo Show last month. Obviously that didn't happen, but while progress is slow, there is some to report.
I've been stripping the paint off the tunnel, the NAPA stripper really works well. I was surprised at the amount of corrosion under the paint. I'm going to have to do some soda blasting and rubbing with a Scotch Brite pad to get this thing ready for paint. That is the big hill I need to get over...If I can get this thing painted before it turns cold, I have a chance of getting it done this year.
I decided to sandblast the "power module" the other night. This is the sub-frame that the ski spindles go in and the engine bolts to. On '72s this unit is steel. I pulled out the blaster, a TIP pressure unit I bought back in the early '80s.
I hadn't used it in a couple of years, and I quickly found that some sand in the mixer valve had turned hard, and was preventing any flow out of the tank. I cleaned that out, but it didn't help much. I decided to drain the sand out of the tank and start over, and when I did I quickly found the new issue, I had a mouse nest in the tank! I drained the sand, blew out the chewed up cardboard, then found I had a crispy critter still in the tank. I poked that out the bottom with a stick, re-assembled the plumbing , re-filled the tank, and things went a whole lot better.
I rattle canned some zinc primer on the steel to keep it from rusting.

Looks good. Keep chugging along, this (in my opinion) is the hardest part of a restoration - stripping paint and rust. Applying new paint is fun, and reassembling the sled is just relaxing :-)

Re: A sled to go with the engine
Here's the WR-7 for the '72 400, all cleaned and rebuilt. Inexplicably, the cleanest Walbro I've ever opened up. I believe it would have run, no rust, no fuel residue, no corrosion.
The foam in the air horn had long ago turned to dust, so I bought a chunk of filter foam from Performance Engineering, and it worked very well. The foam isn't there to filter the air, but help capture some of the spit-back that piston port engines produce.
I had to buy a 12 x 24 x 3/8" piece, and I used a 4" square, so if anyone needs some, let me know.

Looking good Brian!
I'm glad to hear the Walbro rebuild went well. Had it been my carburetor, 2 of the 3 metering plate screws would have twisted off due to moisture sitting the carb. Then I would have been faced with the task of finding a replacement carb.

Re: A sled to go with the engine
I haven't posted about this for a while. The '72 400 restoration is still moving forward.
The tunnel has been stripped, soda blasted, and had the sander ran over it. The majority of the dents have been massaged out. I've kinda ran out of time and warm weather, so Saturday I'm taking it over to a local retired body guy for a fresh coat of JD green.
The chaincase has been freshened up, and I'm working on suspension parts now. I'm excited about the prospect of putting this sled back together.

Wow! I am not sure how I missed that one. Keep up the good job. Too bad we dont live closer; we could go for a cruise on our 72's when your finished.

Re: A sled to go with the engine
I pulled out the box of bogie shafts, contemplating how I should proceed. The guy who rode this sled was a jerk, every single tube is bent. I pulled out the least damaged one I could find, disassembled it, then set it up in the press and worked out the 1/8th inch or so bow in the tube. I tweaked the wheels arms to square them up with the tube, then declared victory. I then pulled out the tube with the most bend in it, and went to work on it. This one was bent so badly I had a hard time pounding the shaft out of it. It straightened out quite nicely, and I decided it was time to sandblast.
I blasted the carriage bolts as well. They are the correct JD logo bolts, so for now anyway, I'll paint them and re-use them.

Re: A sled to go with the engine
Looking good. The hardest part of the assembly is installing the drive shaft. Its a pain in the ass and its one of those jobs that you could use three or four hands to get it done a little easier. Good luck. LOL
