Hello from Colorado.
I have been customizing my 76 440 Liquifire. I am doing the wiring and getting things connected back up. Out of the CDI, there is one black wire with a connector on it, not a bolt type, but a generic female 1/4 in connector. It does not have anywhere to go.
As it sits, with it not connected to anything, it sparks fine. As soon as I ground out the spare wire, it does not spark. In fact, It keeps on sparking even with the key off. I feel as though this unconnected wire is the key here some where. I do not see it anywhere in my electronic schematics that I got off the site.
Any advice is appreciated.
Mike

Mike,
Welcome aboard. The black wire you are referring to is the kill wire. As you found out when you ground it out, you loose spark. It gets connected to the white wire from the ignition switch / kill switch circuit. It used to be wired thru the engine connector but was removed in a "recall" issue. I am not sure which schematic you are looking at but check out this one.http://www.jdsleds.com/tech/wiring/76wiring.jpg

Thanks so much. That makes perfect sense now. I appreciate it very much. You do not know how many beers I have drank trying to figure it out. HEHEHE
Edit.. That is the schematic I had and it doesnt show the loose black wire from the CDI. I do know that the CDI I put in, I had to change the connectors from round plug to the square one that mounds to the engine terminal. Regardless, It works. Thanks!!!!

That was the ticket. I just went out and made the swap. The schematic I had shows the white wire going to the terminal block behind the chain case. Everything works the way it should. Now I can put gas in it and git r running.
