"82 trailfire lx oil pump

Post by robertosalsa »

I Just bought a 82 440 trailfire lx, and the guy informed me that the oil injection works fine. and i know the guy pretty good and dont think he would "screw" me over. however im a little nervous that it could fail at any time. i would like to switch it over and just use pre-mixed gas. which leads me to two questions. One what is the proper ratio i should use (40:1?) and the second question is do i need to do anything special so i dont hurt the pump that is on it? Do i just simply un hook it? pr just drain it? I really dont have a ton of time to mess with it as we just got a good snow tonight and i really want to go riding!

Thanks for your feed back!

I would leave it personally. I have over 6000 miles on my pump, never premixed, and never have i had a breakdown. I have an 83 trailfire btw.

Robert First off the mix is 50:1 but some guys run 40:1 ?? watch your plug color should be the color of cardboard ! 2 if your gonna disconnect the oil injection take the pump off of the recoil and the drive cable out ! then plug your lines that go into the bottom of the intake ! Now if it were me ! Run a tank full of premix through it with the oil tank full and see if the oil level goes down ! then the second tank run premium gas in it ! Do not run cheap gas you will destroy that engine ! Make sure you keep checking your plugs ! They might be a little black from running the premix and i am sure it will smoke some ! Replace the plugs after the premix is gone and your on your second tank of fuel ! Good luck and have fun ! Jdrob

The short answer is Yes, it will get much quieter immediately after the pump fails.

But that will be due to the fact that the engine is seized.

However, the oil pumps are super reliable and very seldom fail. I'd say go with jdrob's advise as that way you will be able to have confidence while running the first tank through that it's getting plenty of oil and you'll be able to see how much oil is being consumed.
