Spitfire is making me mad...

Post by bjt8008 »

Hi Guys. I have a 78 spitfire that i have rebuilt engine and carb. Also has a new cdi box which didnt change anything. :wall: :wall: The engine has a severe bog from just above idle to almost wide open. At wide open it runs good and idles great. The engine will not respond to any carb or timing adjustments. I have turned the timing coil from one end of the slot to the other and no change in engine peformance. I have also turned the piolt screw all the way out and all the way in no change also moved the e clip on the needle also no change. Do you guys have any ideas on what else i can mess with. Thanks for the help...

Just went through the same saga saturday night.I had a carb that was completly gone through, looked like NOS.Same exact thing you are going through.Boggs at exceleration runs fine once the rpms reach about 4000.I had two other kohlers sitting on the bench,I told Dustin lets take one of those old nasty, dirty, coroded carbs off of one of thoses old engines, check the bowl for garbage, put it on and see what happens.Guess what ,It fired right up and 5 min later we were riding it around the yard ran like a dream. So if you have another carb i would recomend putting it on and trying it Brock

I have just got around to switching carbs from a another sled and it shows no improvement. Also switched cdi also. Do you guys think it could be the primary clutch, sticking weights or something?

Have you replaced the crank seals in this motor? Leaking crank seals will cause all sorts of strange running issues. If you really think its something in the primary, try removing the drive belt (I assume you already have). With the drive belt removed, the action of the primary will have no effect what so ever on engine performance.
