What is the model of the engine. This will help us near down the possiblites.

Re: ?? CCW-440 questions ??
right off the top of my head, I can think of 6 different models of Kioritz 440 engines that Deere used, and there are most likely several others that Deere never used. There should be a tag on the front side of the fan tower that tells you the model of the engine. Some of them did just say KEC-440, but most of them had an actual model number on them.

Re: ?? CCW-440 questions ??
If it just says KEC-440 it is a 440/4, which is the 440/5's older brother. The next question is: Is the PTO end of the crankshaft 25mm or 30mm? If it is 25mm, the engine is correct for a '72 500. If it is 30mm, it is correct for a '73 500 and '73 600. Hope this helps.

Compression should be a minimum of 90 psi.
Pre-mix at 50:1
Plugs: NGK BR9HS - the H is important because it's a short reach plug
Not sure on horsepower, maybe low 30s? Has potential for more.

Pretty good guess Matt! My literature shows 36 HP for the 440/4. These sleds would benefit a lot just by having a tuned pipe on them.Matt wrote:Not sure on horsepower, maybe low 30s? Has potential for more.

Re: ?? CCW-440 questions ??
Thats not a bad idea, but you will have to build your own exhaust manifold because nothing was never offered for the exhaust bolt pattern of that engine. That would be easy enough to do if you have a welder, a grinder, and a little patients. The next problem, however comes from the fact that the 800 silencer will not fit between the bulk head and the tunnel of the 600 as it is about 1.5" narrower than the 800. Plus, if you have electric start, the pipe exits right where your battery sits. If the carb is set up correctly, the engine is timed properly, and you run fresh premium gas with good oil at 50:1, a freshly rebuilt motor will last a very, very long time.

I know the 600 had the wide track, but was the tunnel wider? I would guess that they used the same chassis/ tunnel in all the sleds that year. I had no problem putting the 800 exhaust into my 73 jdx8. The big challenge is finding that exhaust system!

Re: ?? CCW-440 questions ??
Yes, the tunnel is 3 inches wider, but the pan, hood, and bumper are all still the same width. You would never get an 18" track in the standard 16.5" tunnel. That is also why there are 2 strips of black tape on top of the tunnel on each side of the seat. They used the regular seat and then put the tape on top of the tunnel to take your eye off of the green paint. The cowling is also the standard unit rather make a wider unit for just one model. This is also why the '75 600's had the plastic cover screwed to the right side of the cowling to cover the fuel lines where they come out of their channel in the tunnel. The snow flap and backrest, however, are wider for this model.
