Trying to organize parts

Post by SpitfireKing »

So for the last few years I have been buying various old sleds to feed my addiction, and of course I collect the decent JD sleds for myself and sell parts from the other makes and models I find to pay for this hard core addiction.

My wife has been on me for months to clean up the parts shop and figure out what I have and to start moving some parts out, so to better expose myself :lol22: I have come up with the following website to list my parts and save myself trying to remember what I have and don't have

This is still a major work in progress but what do you guys think?

www.sandlvintagesleds.com

Thanks guys, and I'm still thinking snow!! Anyone with any JD sleds for sale around Fargo? Heading down this week-end!

Good start! I don't know if I like the background though, makes it look a little messy, plus there is the trademark issue with the current companies.

Well, I'm glad Matt said something about the wallpaper??? Whatever it's called, it's too busy and detracts from your work in my humble opinion.

Nice start! My kids created http://www.vintagejdsleds.com with the same attention. Need them to clean up and finish site. Trying to get away from eBay and sell direct. A work in progress. Wait for a cease and decist letter regarding logos, they are free :). Better to ask for forgiveness than permission!

I'm not too concerned about logos, especially seeing as my decal guy prints me everything I want, including the logo with the 600 on it that's on the side of my 1950 Dodge truck right now. I couldn't get it to go right to the bottom so I've ditched it for now anyway. Webs was a great free site maker back about 2 years ago, but now it's just getting horrible....they have made it so novice ready that it's killed a lot of what you used to be able to do with it

I just hope to be able to move a few more of these parts out...if I can't sell some of these engines in the next year or so their heading to scrap, along with a lot of other parts. I don't even save the tunnels and bodies anymore..just not worth it..if they were in good condition I would have fixed them up for myself or sold them so I figure if they don't meet that critera then nobody else will want them.

I listed a pile more today, but next week I'll be doing my carbs, skis and seats and the rest of the misc.......what a way to spend holidays!

looks nice. I still like the exposure of ebay for used parts and craigslist for selling machines. I try to keep around 400 parts on ebay, if i get anymore the monthly bill gets a little high. But it varies from $100.00 to $200.00 a month depending on how much i sell. I am curious as to how well you guys do as I would love to not give ebay and paypal so much money. best of luck

I currently work at Rock Valley Tractor parts here in Iowa. I really wanted to get into the parts business with snowmobiles/atvs/dirtbikes.
From my current job Ive learned alot about what it takes.

Number 1 thing! I personally think you have got to have an inventory system. Everything gets put away with a part number and a bin location, no piles here and there and i dont care what it came out of. It may fit many things and if you really get into it you will never remember it all.
That's a successful bushiness in my mind.

If stuff gets put under a part number i can google it and it will show up that you have it :D
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.

I just can't invest the time to clean and get every part number, maybe after another 20-30 sleds I might be swamped with parts, but as of now all that parts have a specific home in the warehouse and all tagged. If something sells it comes off the site and out the door.

I have about 10 seats to go, 10-15 complete carbs and then the electrical

But for today till Sunday its all vacation time.... I put a big dent in $200 at Mills Fleet Farm tonight in Fargo :)

I use "totes" to store parts that fit in them. In some cases I divide by parts of the sled, i.e. driveline, body, engine, etc. In other cases I have totes for 340/S parts, CC parts, etc. They stack easy and don't look too bad either. I use LOT's of baggies and have a Dymo LabelWriter 330 to label parts. Keep my inventory in Excel.

My secret is to sell them as fast as I can. Sled in parts out! Then there's no need to organize. :lol22:

i have a 10x24 storage unit full of shelves and tag each part with what it came off of for my ebay stuff. I try to keep the main stuff together cylinders heads flywheels etc. etc. etc. My personal stuff is kinda unorganized in the unit but on its own shelves. but as long as i can remember what i have parted out i can remember kinda whats left of them
